Open up this month’s issue of Número Tokyo, a little bit further past the middle, and you’ll find a feature on independent women in tokyo who are not only doing their thang, but getting publicly recognized for it. In the feature they call it a free-job which is a bit different than free-lance (in the feature…I havent heard the term IRL before it). Basically a girl who is in the industry of free-job is someone who progenerates a culture that identifies with her very unique personality, is savvy on using the media (whether social or traditional) to promote herself and her work, usually can do a dozen different jobs, and is a bit of a weird one (ha! No… but, yes.).

Well, I was asked to be included in the feature and since I welcome a pat on the back for hard work I happily acquiesced. But how shocked was I that they put me in the front (humblebrag!!) and with friends Taguchi Mig and Julie Watai. The way they describe what it means to be a “free-job” girl was wickedly close to my own personal common sense of how the world is. I go to my alma mater Bunka Fashion College every year for a lecture to impending graduates and I tell them pretty much the same thing as was on the article. For example, don’t get stuck on doing just one job, it’s ok to work in multiple arenas (I do writing, editing, designing, styling, creative direction, blogging, consulting, and artisanal creation), and don’t worry about 5 or 10-year goals because things change SO quickly. Can you believe it that 8 years ago Youtube didn’t exist?! And now there are people who become millionaires from it! So always keep an open, and bright mind.

One of the main topics I talked about was Plumb, my affordable but artisanal wig brand that I started last year. People are still surprised to learn I am the CEO of the company! As if it’s so rare in the industry for a woman to own her own brand?! But actually, I think it’s really just because most girls like me would sign with a giant, already-established company and become a “producer” or “creative director” of a line. That doesn’t bother me at all, but my idea of a wig line for fashion fans wouldn’t exactly make a lot of sense for most big corporations but I know that it works. So I had to do it myself.

Someone who recognizes my genius is a great friend, Leslie Kee and stylist Kosei Matsuda— both have been incredible supporters of Plumb for a while now. And just last week when I was in Vegas I got the email: Leslie wanted to feature my wigs in a Mook-book for Tokyo Runway on a slew of super popular models! The mook is coming out the same day as Tokyo Runway, a huge fashion festival at Yoyogi Stadium march 20th. Melody Yohko, Kozue Akimoto etc look amazing in my wigs! Thanks so much to Leslie…can’t wait to share more of it when it’s released….

Here is a photo that Jillian Kate tweeted wearing my new design “Mardi Gras” at the mook photoshoot. I`m wearing it in the Numero feature as well— this one is so popular the number of people who got it could throw their own mardi gras party. It’s available on the site now…but get it while it lasts! I also have made four more new ones…

When I saw you for the first time on the blog, I was impressed by your hair :)
I love changing hairstyle or haircolor because I can feel like being someone new. Therefore I have dyed my hair after finishing exams: mid exams or final exams.
I have never tried wearing a wig, so I would like to buy it in Plumb after the University entrance exam !
