VALENTINE’S DAY IN JAPAN, WHAT THE HECK IS BLACK DAY, AND THE MOST “COSMIC” OUT OF THIS WORLD CHOCOLATES !
アメリカと日本のバレンタインデーイの違い、ブラックデーイとは何か、そしてもっとも美しい「コズミック」で個性的なチョコをご紹介!あげたくなる、もらいたくなるV-DAY!
Valentine’s Day is around the corner, which means there are entire floors of Department stores dedicated to pushing the world’s best chocolate to disparate and nervous women all over Japan. I say women because in Japan, for some odd reaon, V-day is like a Sadie’s School Dance where the women are obligated to give chocolates to the men in their lives. This includes lovers as well as bosses and other colleagues (the latter called “giri-choco” or obligation chocolate). Odd, odd, odd! Of course, they get their returns a month later on White Day on Mar 14 but in my experience White Day is often glossed over and I think it’s BS (Did you know there is a “black day” in Korea on April 14 where you buy YOURSELF chocolates..or eat some bean noodle dish while wallowing with single friends. Yikes!). At least in the West we ONLY have to deal with Valentine’s Day and that alone, while in Japan there’s also Christmas Eve which is far more like the US version of V-day itself. Again, yikes! *_*

I remember my first v-day in Japan (in Kansai) my schoolmate asked if I would please buy choco for her older brother’s band to make them feel happy. Erm, Ok. So I got those fancy little 4-truffle boxes from the department store, gave them happily, and they just added them to their pile of chocolates from all their female fans. And of *course* we don’t get anything back on White Day. BS! My memories of V-day back home were parties in the classroom as an Elementary School student, and passing out “Simpsons” cards to all my classmates. Of course, we don’t have White Day in the US (um, datsracist?!)

So chocolates are on everyone’s brain and around this time of year in the fashion industry I see chocolatiers pushing little gimmicky “shoes” or “bags” or “dresses” fashioned out of chocolate. I personally am not a fan of this, because to be honest the “clothing” is often not what’s “in” at the moment (>_>;;). Instead, I just want to see some AWESOME chocolate. And every year I go to the same place to get mine, and that’s Foucher’s “Olympus” planet series. Look how yummy this is! They always sell out pretty quickly… I get mine from Takashimaya.

If you’re in Osaka then check out Reiko Wada’s “Chocolatines” which are debuting in Japan right now (first Osaka, then Tokyo next month). I *do* love her metallic and paintbrush chocolates. Divine!

And, while on the subject of beautiful chocolates, when I was in paris in Dec I searched so hard for a really, really creative patissier/chocolatier and ended up not being SUPER impressed. But then searching for Foucher above I came across an chocolatier with the same name Jean François Foucher. His work is incredible! And he was with the Hyatt Regency in Osaka before going back to France to take it by storm the past two years. Bring him back! I want a JFF Dr. Seuss cake, please!!

Oh and Valentine’s Day. Well. It’s much cooler to get chocolates on a random nothing day in my opinion ;)
