春画にしゃぶしゃぶ柄って？！パンクなゆかた店「月影屋」の2012夏コレクションを発表！

obi yoroshikuLast night I dropped by Tsukikageya, a rather unique shop, to check out the new textiles for their signature “punk” yukata, cotton PJs and silk jackets.

This brand makes traditional Japanese clothing with a modern-retro twist…think brash and edgy. The style is inspired by the early “yankii” or Japanese motorcycle gangs called “bosozoku” of the 60s and 70s and their common motifs like tigers and money. (actually there are a LOT of bosozoku still making incredible noise and being altogether bothersome outside fo Tokyo today. Especially Kyoto. And taste hasn’t changed much.). You’ll also notice the kanji characters are full of puns that the gangs used to up their machismo game. YOROSHIKU in the obi above is written with the characters for “night”, “expose”, “death” and “suffer”. It is as garish and recognizable as Hell’s Angels tattoos and silver jewelry appropriated for fashion nowadays.
 
But unlike the cheapo yukata you’ll find in cardboard boxes at used stores in Harajuku, these are all handcrafted by true artisans…ones with a sense of humor, that is.   
 
Tsukikageya (“dark side of the moon”) has created their newest collection of original prints for Summer 2012:

昨日、オフィスからほど近い月影屋本店にお邪魔させて頂き、新作のテキスタイルを使ったパンク浴衣、コットンのステテコ、そしてシルクのスカジャンを見せてもらった。

このブランドは、日本の伝統的な浴衣をモダンレトロな解釈で大胆かつエッジィに作り変えた作品で定評がある。ヤンキーや暴走族でよく使われていたファニーなモチーフを浴衣の柄と帯にスワロであしらい、皮肉めいたコレクションがシグナチャー。

その上、原宿の古着屋のダンボールで叩き売りに出されているものとは全く異なり、熟練の職人によって手作業で一つずつ作り出される作品はさながら伝統工芸の様相だ。

それでは早速、月影族が今シーズン打ち出している新作の柄を見て頂き来る夏に備えて一つ誂えてみてはいかがでしょう？

This is called “shun-ga”, which is basically old manga porn. I don’t wear yukata so I want this in a one-piece dress!

こちらは、江戸時代に盛んに描かれた春画をモチーフにしたパターン。 これが凄くお気に入りで、このテキスタイルでワンピースを作ってくれないか頼もうと思っているところ。

There are lots of kitschy retro prints, like the neon lights of Shinjuku, the languishing Tokyo Tower taken with cellphone cameras…

こちらは、東京の夜の姿を携帯のカメラで撮影したというネオンプリント。

The shop sells their items online, but if you want the full effect, then stop by it’s headquarters in Yoyogi-Hachiman.

    What a coincidence, I was in here earlier this week! I stumbled across it purely by chance (ended up going through the back entrance by mistake). Amazing stuff, and the owner/designer couldn’t be cooler.

    My favorite was the Amy Winehouse’s ghost kimono design. She should definitely get that on tights asap. That would sell.
