TOKYO FASHION WEEK..WHAT’S YOUR DEAL, MAN?? ON THE CUSP OF MBFT 2013 FW
東京ファッションウィークの目前で弱みと強みを見極めてみるとーーーー「演出」がキーワード!
GVGV
Tokyo Fashion Week is just around the corner, and I am as excited as ever. Which is funny, because one of the rights of passage to being a fashion writer is becoming jaded, like a well-dressed zombie. And it seems, as we are all exposed to the fashion shows online as both pros and fans alike, the feeling of “I’ve seen this before” inevitably sets in earlier and earlier. Oh yes, everyone’s a critic.

But sure enough, in Tokyo the biggest complaint among my circle and peers has been that our professional attendees have long appeared jaded…or perhaps just placid and eerily calm compared to their NYC, Paris, London or Milan counterparts.

Perhaps it is ingrained in them…after all, it is in the Japanese culture to not stand out or cause a scene. Of course, a thought behind that is that it keeps any kind of attention off of the audience and squarely on the designer. This has been called out many times by foreign visiting journalists as being one of the charms of Tokyo Fashion Week. “It’s about the fashion, not the circus surrounding it.”

Everyone has a different opinion about this. Of course, I am one who has a flair for the dramatic. There’s something to be said about an experience…high fashion is part of that, and it’s become as important as ever now that fast-fashion is catching up with the trends and techniques. Why purchase something for $500 when it can be had for $50..on the same season? In the end, what Japanese fashion brands have is incredible local-made quality (and that is BIG) , attention to detail, and an image of mystere and je ne sais quoi of the patrons who wear it.

I`m talking about the young generation, or at least those who follow the adage of “anything goes.” In fact, mixing high end brands with everything else from the vintage store to the convenience store is something NO ONE else in the world does better than the Japanese. And since the designers showing on the runway are our friends and peers, it’s guaranteed to see the cool labels on the coolest people. THAT’s exciting!

ANREALAGE
I personally LOVE the fashion shows, despite the many detractors. Afterall, you have to make your own experiences. Why do you think I dress up so much…I get to feel like I`m wearing the fashion show and it never ends, even when the lights go up.

And I`m so excited that Tokyo Fashion Week is getting more recognition, because some incredible brands will be showing and they have been on FIRE recently! I`m talking about the mind-stretching ideas at ANREALAGE, the absolute charm at Mintdesigns, the unique styling at Facetasm, the high-octane atmosphere of GVGV, the neo-otaku ideas at Mikio Sakabe & Jenny Fax, the electric celebritydom at Dresscamp, the dark and edgy designs at Christian Dada, the philosophical avant-gardism at Writtenafterwards and the dramatic story telling at Alice Auaa ….among many others.

Now I`m writing daily reports at style.com and that is the ultimate form of flattery for any fashion week, to get that kind of nod. If you don’t think that’s exciting, then you are beyond any saving!

So I hope that all fans and especially the attendees will join me in doing our our jobs, and doing them with PANACHE to attend the fashion shows, and try and get excited for what we see. It’s only a few days a season…try to grit and grin through it mmmkay.
