The Visual-kei of the 90s is alive in China. Meet the street style known as SHAMATE

 ９０年代のビジュアル系が中国でリバイバル？！もっとも”嫌われている”ファッション族 SHAMATEを紹介

So Visual-kei as it was once known, a mind-f+ck of color and big hair and badass attitude a la Hide from X-Japan in the 1980s/90s… is alive! In China! Whodathunk?! But with some edits of course….  meet the tribe known as “SHAMATE”

 鮮やかな色使い、盛られた髪の毛、そしてまるで1980s/90s頃のX−JAPANのHideのような”オーバー”な雰囲気を兼ねそろえた「ヴィジュアル系」は、一時期とても人気だった。それが、今も生きているらしい！中国で！もちろん、少しアレンジされているけどね。ということで、中国で「最も嫌われているサブカル」として知られている「SHAMATE」を今回はご紹介しましょう。

I am not surprised at “Shamate`s” outlandish fashion or hairstyles, we’ve seen all of this before… I am just surprised to see it in China, where underground street style seemed to be non-existent . I went on a few research trips over the past few years to see what’s going on, but I was looking for used clothing shops (there really aren’t any…Chinese people want new things, not old things, I was told) or at “dirty” clubs like the Shelter in Shanghai which are still too hip for the Shamate, since they are considered outcasts.

風変わりなファッションとヘアスタイルで有名なShamateを見た時、私はあまり驚かなかった。それは、日本にいる私はもうすでにヴィジュアル系というカルチャーをよく知っていたから。だけど、何に驚いたって、それがアングラなストリートスタイルが存在しないと思っていた中国で見られるということ。ここ数年、何度か調査のため訪問したけど、古着の洋服屋さんさえなく（中国ではあまりなくて・・・中国人は、みんな新しいものが欲しくて、古着はあまり人気人気がないと聞いた）後、上海にあるシェルターというアングラ系のクラブで探していたの。だけど、Shamateはアウトキャストとされているから、そのようなところにでは見られなかった。

According to this article on Buzzfeed, the Shamate are school dropouts and often don’t live with their own families, instead running to the cities to become “families” with each other. There’s a heirarchy, with leaders, PR people, and workers all having a role to play. It reminds me a lot of the gyaru tribes in Shibuya back in the day, all moving together in groups. They too, were considered outcasts by society and gawked at like zoo animals. 

Buzzfeedのこの記事によると、Shamateは学校を辞めた人たち、なおかつ自身の家族と共に住んでいない人たちが、その代わりとして都市に出てお互いの「ファミリー」になっているんだって。どうやらここには、階層（ハイラキー）ともちろんリーダーがいて、PRの人も、ほかの人もみんな役割があるらしい。これを聞いた時、一昔前に渋谷でたむろしていたギャル集団を思い出した。彼らも動物園の動物みたいに社会からじろじろと見られて、相当なアウトキャストだったね。

The Chinese seem to be a bit more harsh in their criticism than Japan was toward the gyaru, and similarly the V-kei kids or gothic lolitas. I asked a Chinese friend to tell me more about it and she was quite disgusted.. “You think this is interesting?? It’s not cool at all. I don’t like it.” Well, we’re not talking about beauty contests here.  

中国では、日本よりももう少しギャルに対して批判的らしい。ギャルだけでなく、それはV系やゴシックロリータにも同じだ。中国人の友達に、もっと詳しく教えて！と聞いたら、彼女は嫌な顔をしながら「これ、面白いと思う？全くクールだと思わない。私は好きじゃない。」と言った。だけど、彼女は1999年のShamateの中国での出現についての記事を教えてくれた。

The name “SHAMATE” seems to translate to “Smart”, but apparently they dig themselves a hole in their surroundings by being reclusive, defensive and unruly instead of rolling with the punches..maybe not so smart. In any case, they have NO direct relation to Visual-kei other than the fashion style, and tend to prefer more hardcore EDM music instead. They also seem to have a mother “queen” who is leader of them all, who looks like a ghost/vampire hybrid (which I think is some awesome makeup skill, tbh).

What do you think about SHAMATE? I hope to see some evolution of more Chinese street style into something really unique and all their own.

SHAMATEという名前は、英語でいうとSmart(賢い）という言葉に訳されるらしい。だけど、彼らは周囲に落とし穴を堀りまくって、自身を隔離し、防御し、誰にも頼らないという少し反抗的な態度をShamate以外の人間にとるようだ。まあ、あんまり賢くはないかもしれない。とはいえ、ファッション以外には彼らとヴィジュアル系の間には全く直接的な関連はないらしく、X-JapanやBalzacのような音楽よりハードコアなEDMを好むらしい。それに加え、彼らには「クイーン」と呼ばれるお化けのような、ヴァンパイアみたいな格好をしたリーダーがいるようだ（このクイーンのメイクはとっても優れた技術力ではあるとおもう）。
