Taking a page from the wonderfully creepy “study of a pope” series by Francis Bacon comes this 2014-15 collection by Taro Horiuchi titled “Role Play”. The final collection is hardly a nightmarish vision however, with pretty pastels and lovely flower motifs set on a bed of graphical, sporty designs.
Taro is not your typical designer in that he has a history or artistic endeavors that started with his graduating from the Royal Academy of Antwerp at the top of his class, winning the Italian ITS Award, and subsequently turning down an offer from Dior Homme to return to Tokyo instead to start his brand…
フランシスベーコンのあのゾッとするような”ローマ法王シリーズ”をソースにコレクションを発表したのはタロウホリウチ。コレクションのタイトルは”ロールプレイ”。悪魔的要素を主張しながらもパステルカラーやフラワーモチーフなどのキュートな要素も含んだ、グラフィカルでスポーティなデザインだ。
外見的にカジュアルにデザインするタロウホリウチですが、実はかなりアート的な経緯を持つ。彼はアントワープロイヤルアカデミーを首席で卒業。また、ITSアワードで賞を獲得するなどキャリアを積み、帰国して東京に。その際ディオールオムからのオファーを蹴ったという話もある。

This collection is just a slice of what Taro Horiuchi’s imagiantion as he is an extremely versatile designer . He is hailed for his obession with perfection in finishing and quality, and collectively simplistic silhouettes harboring uncollectively characteristic details. Notice the galactic sneakers and embroidery a la Honma’s rendering, in a Latin style. I appreciate even this small effort of a commercial (albeit boutique) brand to do some pieces that will catch the eyes of foreign buyers (these pieces don’t sell well in Japan but I am told that foreign buyers overwhelmingly prefer the unique pieces in these collections. Kind of a “duh” there…).

このコレクションでは彼の多才なデザイナーとしての一面が垣間見える。完成度の高さにこだわりクオリティを求める彼のアートワークはとても評価されていて、全体的にみるとシンプルなシルエットだがそのなかに特徴的なディテールを含む。プリントを担当したのはタカシホンマさん。見て、この不気味にチャーミングなスカルたち！
本間さんが手がけたグラフィカルなスニーカーや刺繍はラテン的匂いがする。小さなことかもしれないけれど、イノベーションや斬新さへの協力を嬉しく思います。海外バイヤーの目を引くにはとても効果的。(実は日本での受けはそんなによくない。でも前からお話ししているように、海外のバイヤーたちはユニークなものが大好き。)
