SOEN AWARDS 2013. THE BEST OF JAPAN’s YOUNG HOPEFUL DESIGNERS ARE BACK TO THE FUTURE.

 2013年の装苑賞。日本発の最も期待できる若きデザイナーは今年、様々な意味で”ブライトな未来”を見ている様子・・

The SOEN awards, for those not in the know, is an annual celebration of the most innovative young promising designers in Japan. Hopefuls go through a rigorous portfolio and weeding-out process carried out by 8 judges that happen to be some of this country’s top designers. I`m talking Tsumori Chisato, Junko Koshino, DRESSCAMP’s Toshikazu Iwaya, Keita Maruyama, Mina Perhonen’s Akira Minagawa and SOMARTA’s Tamae Hirokawa.

With this said, since it’s a contest and not a graduate show, designers only get to show 3 looks on the runway, and the emphasis is on *innovation* so you’ve got a lot of conceptual fashion every year. This means crazy shapes and experimental textiles. Or sometimes, it’s taking something banal and creating something new out of it… see the satin ribbon sculpture below!

ファッション業界で知らない人はいなりだろうけど念のため・・「装苑賞」とは日本の最も革新的な若手デザイナーに毎年送られる賞です。クリエイターの卵たちは、この国のトップデザイナーである8人の審査員による厳しいポートフォリオ審査や競争をくぐり抜けてきました。審査員を務めたのは津森千里氏、コシノジュンコ氏、ドレスキャンプの岩谷俊和氏、丸山敬太氏、ミナペルホネンの皆川明氏、ソマルタの廣川玉枝氏などといった錚々たる面々！

これは卒業制作のショーではなくコンテストなので、デザイナーがランウェイで披露できるのは３体のルックだけ。ここでは“革新”に重点が置かれるので毎年発想力豊かなファッションをたくさん目にすることができます。たとえばクレイジーな形状や先駆的なテキスタイルなど。そして時には、よく目にする何かによって常軌を逸するような新しい何かを作り上げることも…例えば下のサテンリボンの彫像みたいに。

The only thing about conceptual fashion is it tends to have the SAME shape and qualities…too short, can’t move in them, extremely stiff and “fattening”. Seriously, these designers can create til the cows come home, but can they make something that’s cool AND flatters the body? I feel like that’s how the newest forms of innovation can be judged (like all of those techno dresses coming out these days, they’re cool, but ugly as fug).

You see, there’s two ways to look at a fashion show like this: I could be a critic, and kind of remove myself from the fashion and look at it contextually and more “coldly”. Kind of like an out-of-body experience. OR I could come back to my body and think of these pieces as a person who might one day want to wear them. I chose the latter this time. It’s a special position to be in, kind of like shopping the runway. So take a gander at the BEST of 2013!

コンセプチュアルなファッションについて一つ言えることは、まったく同じ形とクオリティーになりがち…要するに心が惹かれても体は別。究極に硬くて、太って見える。真剣に、天才アイディアの持主は永遠に作ることができるけど、彼らはクールで、しかも身体を綺麗に見せてくれるような何かを作れる？という面も頭に入れてあります。というのは、もはやファッションの暦は長いし、この時代になってこれぐらいのレベルで“斬新なファッション”を批評したら、進化はおこるはず。

こういうファッションショーを見る時には２つの方法があるの。評論家になったつもりで、自分を消して文脈的にというか、より“冷たく”そのショーを見る方法が１つ。幽体離脱するみたいな感じで (w。もう１つは、ちゃんと自分がしっかり戻っている状態で、いつかこの洋服を着たいと思っている人としてこれらのショーピースのことを考える方法。今回は後者を選んだというわけです。まるでランウェイでショッピングしているみたいで、特別な気分なの。そういうわけなので、BEST of 2013は下記ご覧ください！

 

Akihiro Kondo/ Kei Kuwabara  “MIXIM”  近藤晃裕／桑原 啓

These pieces won a prize…the structure is created out of stiff perspex and a top layer of colored vinyl. I was kind of lamenting to the designer how I couldn’t possibly move in them, but he relented that he also makes accessories in a  similar fashion. Much better!

これらの作品が受賞したもの。硬い透明なアクリル樹脂と彩色されたビニールの表面によって構成されています。デザイナーの方には申し訳ないのですが、私は着てもなかなかうごきづらそう・・と泣きながら言ったら、彼が同じようなテイストでアクセサリーも作っていると言われた。良かった！

 Kei Kuwabara “美数値空間” 桑原啓

These pieces also won… the grand prize! And they are by the same designer as above. Uncanny. Perhaps the judges are in the mood for super fine 3D detail? For these pieces, the texture was created out of what felt like flexible film and then spraypainted over the top to create the ombre gradations.

「第87回装苑賞」に輝いたのはこれらの作品で、なんと上の作品と同じデザイナーによるもの！きっと審査員の方々は、ものすごく細かい立体的なディテールがツボだったのかも？生地はフィルムのようなものから作られていて、グラデーションカラーを表現するためにスプレーでペイントされたもの。

Victoria Veselova “森 In Me” ヴェセロヴァ・ビクトリア 

This frothy cupcake collection by Russian design hopeful Victoria kind of took me by surprise… it wasn’t until I started reviewing the photos that I noticed the frills created an image of a deer! Impressive—!

このふわふわのカップケーキみたいなコレクションは、有望なロシア人デザイナー ヴェセロヴァ・ビクトリアによるもの。この日の写真を振り返っていて、フリルが立体的な鹿を作り上げていると気付いた時初めてビックリした。すごーーーい！

Kaori Tanaka “GUUSOU偶発性理論” 田中香里

As much as I appreciate futuristic fashion, Kaori Tanaka’s cyber techno dresses seem a bit cliched. And the textile mix of organdy and active-wear isn’t easy to pull off if one isn’t a couturier. BUT, I LOVE the bodysuit she created for them underneath. They can be paired with a simple elegant skirt and it would look incredibly fashion-forward.

私みたいに未来的なファッションを好む者からすると、このサイバーテクノドレスは少し食傷ぎみ。また、オーガンジーとアクティブウェアの素材の融合はクチュリアーでないと制作は難しそう。でもその下に作られたボディースーツは本当に完成度調高くて、本当に”新しさ”を感じさせた。シンプルでエレガントなピースと合わせたら最高なネオおしゃれコーデできそう。

Akira Kanamaru & Naoto Komiyama “UN DESIGNING” 金丸亨／小宮山直人

Yes, so this one is kind of cool…. but it’s not the dresses that had my heart. Rather….OMG SHOES.

うん、これはクールなんだけど…私のハートをグッと掴んだのは…あぁ神様、この靴！

SHOESSSSSSS! Amazing. 

 だからこの靴てば！イエス。

Kazusa Hagiwara “ラインの浸透” 萩原和紗

At first I didn’t like this…. I know! I just can’t get behind an all-white collection usually. But then I looked again when editing the photos and I had a newfound appreciation for the patterning skills on display here. And while conceptual, they still look really comfy— very 2.5 dimension, I think. They could use some color, however (just a personal preference). 

これは最初あんまり好きじゃなかったんだけど…そうなの！いつもオールホワイトのコレクションをあんまり好きになれなくて。でもこの写真を編集している時にもう一度見たら、新しい発見として画面からも伝わるパターニングスキルの高さが目に付きました。しかもコンセプチュアルでありながら、本当に快適そうに見えて——めっちゃ2.5次元的だと思う。他にも何色か使えば良いのに、とは思うけど。（あくまで個人的な見解なので）

Harue Nagamoto “MIMIC” 長元春恵

These pieces were my favorite! the mix of wooden “tongue pressers” to create the look of a birdhouse roof, along with the incredibly real-looking fake fur and other wood accents had me spellbound. And take a look at the wooden arm cuff! Apparently they can be bought from the designer…. sign me up!

お気に入りのピース！鳥小屋の屋根の形になっている木製の“へら”と信じられないくらいリアルなフェイクファーの組み合わせ、他の木材が醸し出すアクセントにうっとりしました。そして木製のカフスに注目！絶対デザイナーから注文が入りそう…私も予約させて！

 

Shin Ogata “broken geometric” 緒方晋

Some more 2.5D moveable pieces. The layer of handmade textiles here is actually quite impressive—- and the colors are fun and fresh. I just can’t figure out the giant collar… maybe something less would have been a better choice of taste? I like the dress below though, it’s a bit short pour moi so I am admiring it as a showpiece from afar.

もっと2.5次元的な作品も。この手作りの布地の層は、実際かなり素晴らしい！色彩も楽しくて鮮やか。ただ巨大な襟はちょっと謎…。下のドレスは好きだけど、超ミニだから着れるか着れないか、と頭をぐるぐるさせられたw。

 

Kana Kadoguchi  “海の森” 門口夏奈

YOU SAW THAT, right?? Undersea-themed pieces in vivid ombre and 3D “applique” created out of SAFETYPINS. Wrap your head around that! Then pop it with a pin. It’s incredible. I would endure the weight needed to wear it because it’s so cool. And the shoes are great, too.

気づいたでしょ？？鮮やかなグラデーションで彩られた海中がテーマの作品と3D装飾は安全ピン（！）で作られた。安全ピンでポっプ！・・頭が安全ピンでポン！最高。とてもクールだから着る時の重みにも耐えられそう。そしてこれまた靴も素晴らしい。

 

Morio Deguchi “女マッチョ” 出口壮夫

This jacket. THIS. JACKET. Pink gorilla arms attached to lime green vinyl bodice. Heaven, you rang? 

これ。そう。このジャケット。ライムグリーンのビニールで作られたボディにくっ付いたピンクのゴリラの腕。もう、ノックアウト！！

Akihiro Kondo “sentimentalism” 近藤晃裕

These reminded me of a more colorful version of the sculptural fashion that someone like Iris Van Herpen is doing. But again, the most impressive element here was not just the dresses, but the GORGEOUS shoes. I honestly haven’t seen shoes so breathtaking in a while! Must…. procure…..!

イリス ヴァン ヘルペンがやったような、もっとカラフルなバージョンの彫刻的なファッションを思い出しました。しかしここでも、最も印象的なのはドレスとは限りません。この最高にゴージャスな靴。正直、こんなに息をのむような綺麗な靴はここしばらく見ていませんでした。絶対…手に入れなきゃ…！

 

Ryohei Murakami “速度” 村上遼平

Here is what I was talking about above, when designers take something banal and create something incredible with it. This is satin ribbon used to create scaly tendrils that writher around the dresses. His pleating skills as you can see are also something to definitely be awestruck over. And can Google glass look as cool as these shades, please? Future, come on here, already!

 これは最初の方で私が書いていた、デザイナーがどこにでもあるような物を使って信じられないような素敵な何かを作る時の話。ドレスの周りに巻き付く、うろこ状のツルを表現するために使われたサテンリボンがこれ。見て分かる通り、彼のプリーツ加工技術はまさに感嘆すべき。Google Glassもこのシェードと同じくらいかっこよくなりません？未来はもう、すぐそこまで来てる！
