2013秋冬開幕！MBFT東京ファッションウィークへHELLO! そしてオープニングで最後のコレクションを豪華ランウェイで見せてくれたマスターマインドへGOODBYE

Sunday today started off with a “hello” to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tokyo and a “farewell” to Mastermind Japan. The wildly popular brand showed their current 2013 SS collection on the runway as a gesture to bring out the crowd to the opening of fashion week, as the fans are legion and they’ll come as far as from Hong Kong to see the final collection in action.  

さて本日日曜日は、東京コレクションのオープニングと、そのオープニングアクトであるMastermindにお別れを告げる日でした。今回発表したのは、ブランド休止前最後のシーズンとなる２０１３年春夏コレクション。１５年という歴史の中で、日本のみならず世界中にファンを作り出してきたこのブランドのラストコレクションということで、会場はそのファン達によって埋め尽くされました。

There were skulls everywhere…on the audience, on the models, and on the runway…a veritable burial ground! Upon closer look, I noticed the entire runway was not just mirrored, but covered in a holographic skull and bones motif as well. 

The SS mens collection was a shelf toppling with collabs from Adidas to Stussy, Madonna to the Rolling Stones and many more I couldn’t recognize from their conspicuousness. Being conspicuous is one of Mastermind’s traits, with luxury-level prices that tout accents to match; mink fur trim, french finishing techniques, cashmere denim, crystals, gold and hand-studding.  Designer Homma-san did NOT cut corners. And the clothing is supposedly ALL made locally, including the hand-studding (I met the guy after the show) so it’s a HUGE loss for the local economy to lose Mastermind. 15 years in, and Homma-san decided he was done and better to quit while he was still up rather than beat a dead horse. ブランドの顔でもあるスカルモチーフを、作品のみならずいたるところに使用した今回のショーでは、空間全体を使用してブランドの世界観を表現した一大スペクタクルとなった。

肝心の洋服はというと、アディダスやステューシー、マドンナやストーンズなどこれまでにコラボしてきたビッグネームのアイテムを随所に散りばめ、なおかつマスターマインドのお家芸であるスーパーラグジュアリーな作品を全面に押し出していた。ミンクのトリミング、フレンチテクニックを駆使したテーラリング、カシミア製のデニム、クリスタルに手作業で打ち付けられたゴールドのスタッズ。ショーが終わったあと、このスタッズ装飾を行った職人の方にお会いしたのだが、彼の話を聞き改めて国内産業の粋を凝縮したマスターマインドの作品がこれらの二次産業に貢献してきた面について考えさせられた。値段の高さには理由がある。それがマスターマインドが１５年かけて貫いてきたセオリーなのだ。

会場には、今や押しも押されもせぬ人気を誇るフォトグラファーの蜷川実花の姿も。以前彼女がコラボしたスカルとフラワーモチーフをあしらったシャツを着ていました。

I spoke with designer Masaaki Homma afterwards , and he was shedding tears after shaking hands with some of his long-time friends, fans and also the local artisans he employed during his tenure. I asked what was next, “I dunno, collaborations I guess. I`m still young, after all!!” And then he joked about copying my skeleton leggings. Hey, Homma-san, collaborate with me, then! 

ショー後のデザイナーの本間さんですが、目頭に涙を溜めながら長年の友人に温かく囲まれた彼の姿が印象的でした。そして私も胸がいっぱいになりながら話を聞いた。”先のことはまだ分からないけど、まだリタイアするには若過ぎるからね。多分骨のプリントのレギンスでも作ると思うよ。”と、私の履いていた骸骨柄のレギンスを指差して冗談交じりに答えていた。本間さんの今後の展開に誰もが期待を寄せている中、デザイナー本人から前向きな発言が聞かれたのが何よりも心強い。
