Ruffles are a very polarizing style choice; you either love or loathe the pouf. But for designer Tomo Koizumi, he finds infinite inspiration in piles of organdy and tulle. Recently he’d been designing costumes for popular Japanese performers and idols who prefer tufts of the frilly stuff and so has been playing with ruffles for quite some time now. But the level of fluff in his newest collection is a sight to behold. And yet, this isn’t your stereotypical type. They engulf but also engage in an odd way… feminine but alien… pretty but deformed. I asked Tomo about this seemingly obsession with ruffles. He said, “I`ve been interested in voluminous silhouettes for a long time. When it came down to creating a collection with a costume-y approach, I decided to base it on ruffles. I’m so happy with it, I want to keep up this series of ruffle designs for a while now. And in the end, I want to become a ruffle artisan.”
