I have been furiously flipping through the lookbook pages of fashion portals online as of late, looking for something to satisfy the craving to wear something conceptual and stronger than what has been making the rounds. Many Japanese designers have been compelled (or forced) to pare down their designs due to economic factors, so I didn’t have high hopes for finding something to satisfy my terms. And then I came to Rekisami and Ms. Kisada, and it was…an epiphany!
Rekisami is headed by Chika Kisada, a former ballerina cum fashion designer. It’s through her eyes we are introduced to a sharp yet rough world, filtered through a wildly elegant lens. That world is filled with twists, asymmetry, sharp cuts, transformation, and…harnesses. Yes, this is more “black swan” than “swan lake”.
Ms. Kisada may be one of the hardest working women in Japanese fashion at the moment, as she also has another brand under her own name CHIKA KISADA. All of the Rekisami designs are made for an individualistic woman who also (probably) pays for her own goods and needs to go to work in them. This means wearable clothes with myriad twists in the designs, and a punch of punk with a lot of leather, asymmetry and wrapping culling from the signature harnesses that got her her name under the CK label.
Both are made up of clothing that will surely take on a different personality depending on who wears them- a boyish girl or an elegant girl will give the same piece a totally different kind of energy. Looking back at the archives, it’s also obvious that Kisada doesn’t settle for orthodoxy- and with a background in ballet, you know that she’s in it for the love of it with dedication to the craft. So it was with great pleasure to discover Rekisami and Chika Kisada, and I can’t wait to scour the racks looking for her designs now.
