ニットの魔法使い、モトヒロタンジ。Couturier for our alien overlords: Motohiri Tanji Tokyo FW 2016

巧みにニットを操るモトヒロタンジ。２シーズン前から東京ファッションウィークにてショー形式でコレクションを発表してきた。

2016-17秋冬ではユーズドのデニムをリメイクしてニットと合わせるという新しい動きが見られた。ケーブルニットのディテールが印象的だった。

Motohiro Tanji is a master of knit, likened to an HR Giger sculptor ever since he started showing his collection at Tokyo Fashion Week two seasons ago. For his Fall Winter 2016-17 show he tried something new, by taking second hand denim and custom “remaking” them with some of his unique and intricate cable-knit details.

I thought this was a styling trick, but it’s an actual scarf. Sweet. スタイリングによる仕組みかと思ったら、実はニットはストールなんだ。面白い〜

コンセプトは”A Distorted Space＝” 歪められた空間” それにちなんでか、客席の椅子の高さはバラバラだった。ショーが始まると、おもしろいスタイリングが次々と登場した。セーターを上下逆に着たり、片袖をスカーフのように巻き、(ミーシャも好きで、二のセーターでもしようできるよくやるスタイリングテクニック！) もう片方の袖を内側に入れアシンメトリーなクロップドトップスのように着たり。さらに冒険的な作品は続く。４つ袖が付いているニットは背中に空いた穴に頭を通して、本来頭を入れるべき穴が体の正面、中心にぽっかりと現れた。ミステリアスなディテールも、モトヒロタンジのシグニチャーの１つである。

今回のデニムリメイク×ニットは、彼のテクニックに注目を集めるという点でとても優れていたと思う。全身ニットだと、重たくて扱いにくい印象になるけど、(ミーシャ個人的にはちょっと手を出しにくいと感じる…)彼の強みである3Dっぽいニットは言うまでもなくゴージャスで素晴らしい。その、技術と今回のようなデニムや、またはコットンTシャツなどカジュアルな生地の融合はすごく素敵だと感じたし、このままその方向でどんどん洗練されて行って欲しいと思う。例えばポリエステルやシルクだって、彼は巧みに使いこなしてしまうのでは？と今後を楽しみにした矢先。。。「ショー形式に関しては、来シーズンを機に秋冬のみに的を絞り、よりニットのテクニックに集中した物作りをしていく」と発表した。これはこれで、楽しみだ。だって、1年かけて作られるコレクションだなんて、どんなすごいデザインが見れるんだろう！？ショーも、その間の作品も、今から待ちきれない。

The concept for this collection was “A Distorted Space”. The chairs for his audience were all of differing heights, foreshadowing his show which saw sweaters styled all twisted and topsy-turvy on the models. Sweaters and their sleeves were turned into scarves (which is one of my own favorite styling techniques) and others were rolled up inside, to make them appear to be asymmetrical crop-tops. Others were a bit more adventurous, with 4 sleeves or excessive holes for the head, once again bringing in the more mysterious, sci-fi element that Motohiro Tanji is known for.

Personally, I thought the denim remake with his knit is one of the best things he could do to get people to focus on his techniques. An all handmade knit piece can be quite cumbersome, heavy and thus difficult to wear (I own several, they can be hard on the back, if ya know what I mean). His 3D knit techniques are gorgeous pieces of work, and fusing them with lighter, more casual fabrics like denim and cotton t-shirts like he did here was a step in the right direction, I thought. I would love to see him mix in more fabrics with his techniques, like new poly, or even silk. Alas, Motohiro Tanji is set on challenging himself by sticking to what he knows best. He said, “From next season I`m just going to focus on the Fall Winter collection, using nothing but knit, to hopefully get people to see how great it can be.” If this is the case, then perhaps there are some really amazing ideas up his sleeve that I can’t wait to see, even if it takes a year.
