Not unlike the nomads of ethnic tribes of the world, when a worker leaves the brand it works for, he always keeps a part of that influence in his oeuvre. In Miyao’s case that is Comme des Garcons, which is not a shabby empire from which to seed the world. We last checked in six months ago, and he’s already expanding the collection enormously with Miyao AW 2015.
We asked the designer himself about this autumn/winter 2015-16 collection and the vision of a woman he was painting: “I wanted to draw on the strength of a flower, loveliness, and that appearance…. It’s about the power of life,” he said.
And then asking him about the militaristic series, he says, “More than “military” I would call it “olive-colored” which is the color I wanted to start with, and the military designs just kind of came from wanting to emphasize that color. But on the other end of the spectrum are the flower motifs and lace in casual, relaxed clothing.”
The brand name Miyao sounds like “meow”, non? In fact, as I kept saying it over and over again, I felt like I was talking as a cat. And with that, Miyao put out some knits with “miaule” which is meow in French… coming from such a “serious” educator in fashion design, it’s great to see these kind of funnyman wink-wink touches and I surmise they will be popular pieces from here on out.
