MISHA’S “MOVIES WITH STYLE” WORTH WATCHING THIS HOLIDAY BREAK. ALL FEASTS FOR THE EYES AND CLOSET.
ミーシャの選ぶスタイリッシュかつ満腹感のあるグローバル映画のTOPランキング!どれが一番気になる?
Let’s talk about movies. It’s almost the new year and you’ll be getting some time off and trust me you don’t want to be watching TV all week. My top 5 favorite movies have a lot of style, but you’re not going to find anything too obvious…so, sorry Audrey, I do love you though.
今回は、いつもとは少し違って映画の話をしましょう。
DOLLS
This is my third favorite movie of all time. Directed by Beat Takeshi, this movie has so much soul yours might feel heavy from overload. It tells the story of two lovers who are destined to never be together even though they are tied together by the Japanese “red thread” of destiny. Sad! Oh, it totally is….a happy movie this is not..exactly. It’s romanticism manifests in other ways…. As the two main characters trudge through the Japanese landscape and seasons we meet a few other characters and their stories along the way. In the end, you’ll see what happens to the two lovers, but the beauty here is in the landscapes and the costumes. You will never see such beauty in another movie. The costumes were designed by Yohji Yamamoto and his genius in color and layering is awe-inducing and makes you root for the characters to gain the will to trudge on….if only to see more costumes!

The City of Lost Children
You’ve all seen, or at least heard of, Amelie right? Well this is an early movie by the same director, Jean Pierre Jeunet… and I think it is BETTER than Amelie by like a million. That’s not just because the costumes were designed by Jean Paul Gaultier… but because it is a dark, stylish fantasy movie that doesn’t treat it’s audience like children (even if its about children). In it, the world is post-apocalyptic and French villages exist on the water. One city is haunted by a genius mad scientist who can only have nightmares and is plagued by headaches. To get a good night’s sleep he tries to steal the dreams of children but keeps failing because he’s so scary they have nightmares themselves. One little boy is kidnapped by the scientist and it’s up to a little orphan girl and her circus freak friend to get him back and stop the scientist. You’ll fall in love with the little girl and her red striped sweater as well as the quirky world. There was a poster for this pasted up on a backstreet in Omotesando I discovered a few years ago and I wanted to meet the person who also loved this movie as much as I did (the poster rotted and got taken down unfortunately).

Le Magasin des Suicides
I just watched this movie on the plane coming back from Paris and I was so drawn into it’s world of melodramatic, dark animation. It reminded me of The Nightmare Before Christmas because it’s such a dark story, but I dare liked the animation and characters even better than ANBC. In it, a near-future Paris is wrought with terrible recession from global warming and many people find that the only way to relief is through suicide. To help them out is a fancy little family-run boutique that helps them kill themselves in every way imaginable. Heavy. And it’s a musical! Whoah. Well, the morbid family meets its match when their youngest son proves to be annoyingly happy and positive and he sets out to ruin their suicide business. It’s super, super adult but also smart and beautifully animated. I don’t know if it’s available in Japanese yet…it was just released in Sept. You might have to deal with English subtitles only, and **cough** download it. At least watch this song from the movie opening…you’ll want to see the whole thing, though.

Tamala 2010 -A Punk Cat in Space-
This is another animated movie, this time from Japan. I remember seeing ads for this movie on flyers when I was an exchange student in Kobe 10 years ago but it was only being shown in art houses for those 20 years old and over (I was not at the time. Bummer!). So by the time I came back to Tokyo I was able to rent it and it was SO WEIRD. This is another near-future movie, where everyone is an animal and lives in a corporate-run urban-wasteland world like The Fifth Element. The main character Tamala goes on a psychedelic space journey, gets a boyfriend, wants to be eaten by a dog who’s like a yakuza boss, and is fighting the corporation Catty & Co. that runs the world. There’s a giant Colonel Sanders that runs around the city with an axe in his head. Hoo-boy.

The Matrix
I know, I KNOW. And Imma let you finish but it’s the best movie of ALL time. If you haven’t seen it yet (WHAAAAAT?) GO GET IT. I can’t believe it’s already 13 years old! The thing about this movie is the costumes are so fashionable they still hold up today (ignore the phones they use… they would totally be smartphone people). The whole movie has a green filtered tint to it, which makes me think that perhaps in the future we get to instagram all of our reality to the filter of our choice. Rad. I want my world to be permanently Amarro. Here is the requisite Youtube vid of the badass-est fight scenes set to the ending song “Wake Up” by Rage Against the Machine.

The Fall
Special mention goes to this movie because it has the most incredible costumes in a film I have ever seen in my entire LIFE and may ever see henceforth. The costumer was Eiko Ishioka, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated costume designers and who passed away just this year (RIP). The film is by Tarsem and presented by Spike Jonez and David Fincher. You MUST see this film– I don’t want to spoil anything, just look at these stills and watch the trailer. You’re welcome.
