Mintdesigns publishes first archive book; let’s look at the past shows! ミントデザインズ初となる作品集の発行に際して、全てのコレクションを振り返って見よう！！

ダークとかわいらしさは共存できるのか？イエス、ミントデザインズなら可能。彼らは日本発オリジナルブランドとしてこの十年、ずっとトップを走り続ける。外国風気球&巨大なアリのプリントとか、銃のターゲットマークが当てられたうさぎのプリントを発表していながら、クレイジーなブランドというカテゴライズをされていないブランドなんて、すごくレア！クレイジーな事と言えば、アジア中から群れになってやってくるファンの数。

この度、このブランド初となる作品集 ”Mintdesigns” が発売される。まだまだ得体の知れない未知数のブランド、ミントデザインズに人々が魅了される理由が明らかになることでしょう！

Is it possible to be both dark and chipper at the same time? Yes, if you’re Mintdesigns. It’s one of the most original brands to come out of Japan in the past 10 years. Nowhere else can you find a label that gets away with having collections of cute European hot air balloon prints followed by giant ants, or rabbits in a gun’s bullseye without being called a little bit crazy. But the only thing crazy here are it’s legions of fans across Asia and the globe who come in droves.

Now, with the planned release of Mintdesigns first archive book it will be much more obvious to see what draws everyone to this enigmatic brand.

 

 

もちろん、2001年のブランド設立から、幾度となく人々を感動させてきたコレクションも全て収録されるらしい。ブランドシンボルのかわいらしいオリジナルパターンも、きっとディテールまでしっかり見れるはず。また、今まで大々的には公開してこなかった気になる制作過程なども。全240ページにわたる作品集は、ミントファンだけでなくファッションファンには見逃せない一冊になるでしょう！

5/20から6/2まで、伊勢丹の東京解放区では”カレ展”が開かれる。(カレ＝正方形のスカーフ) 過去のアーカイブの柄をつかったカレや、カレ柄のワンピースや小物が買えるそう。

東京ファッションダイアリーでも、今までミントのコレクションを何度も取り上げてきました。

ミントは本当に素晴らしいブランド！ショーが近づいてくる度にいつも、どんなコレクションを魅せてくれるのかわくわくする。ショーの世界観づくりも徹底していて引き込まれる。加茂さんなども手がけたヘッドピースもミントデザインズのショーの魅力のひとつ。

これを機にバックステージの写真も含めて一部を写真で振り返ってみましょう。毎回アイコニックなコレクションは、１枚写真を見るだけでそのときのショーの雰囲気や他のルックの数々、その時期の自分のファッションなど色々な記憶をフラッシュバックさせてくれるもん！

The book itself is 240 pages and is a collection of photos featuring both their clothing as well as products, and the various art installations they’ve created over the years. Of course, it also features details on their famous quirky jacquard which is what got them their big break and they’ve continued with every season. You’ll also get a good up-close look at their fashion show looks, which always come with amazing head pieces made by the incredibly talented Katsuya Kamo. If you are interested remotely in either, this will be a no-brainer to pick up.

Mintdesigns’ first collection was in 2001. Since then, they have consistently shown amazing runway collections, and as the little rebels they are, have never shown on the official calendar of Tokyo Fashion Week (that comes into play down-article).

Let’s go through them and see just how they’ve remained true to their black humor throughout the years.

「ハッピーミステイク」（嬉しい間違い）というミントデザインズのモットー！今までこのフレーズはプリントとして数々の作品に登場してます。
“Happy mistake” has since become the signature for the house, appearing in its jacquard and accessories like bags and socks ever since.

2008 ss [the flying girls 1808]

ミーシャとミントの最初の出会い。。。雑誌で見たら、”オーマイガー！頭に気球が！” まだ学生だったけど本当にこのショーには潜り込みたいって思った。

My first encounter with Mintdesigns was here. “OMG they’ve got hot air balloons in their hair!” I really wanted to sneak into one of their fashion shows.

ミントの反抗期！トゲトゲのマスクに死神のフロッキープリントをフィーチャー。
“hankoki” means “rebellious period”. Notice the thorns, and the flocky print with the skeletal grim reaper prancing around.

2010 ss [kira kira•pica pica•hira hira•fuwafuwa•suke suke•sara sara]

Those words are the sounds of “flutter”, “shine”, “smooth”, “flap” etc…

2011-12 aw [fashion surgery (a new hope)]

こんなエピソードもある。あれは、東北大震災の後で、日本が大ダメージを受け消沈していた時だった。東コレはイベントの中止を公式発表したが、ミントは東京ベイの近くの古い印刷工場(タブロイド）でショーをしたのだ。(なってこった！)しかもランウェイはとても狭いスチールの上。(またまたなんてこった！) でもたちまちショーが始まり、ウォーキングをするモデルたちにライトが向けられると、会場には違った空気が広がった。”前に進まなければいけない。このショーが背中を押してくれてる。”みんなそう感じていた気がした。(本当は暗いトーンのコレクションになるはずだったところを、カラフルなものに作り変えたという事実もすごい)

This collection was a major stand at a time when Japan was still reeling from the Fukushima earthquake and fallout. Tokyo Fashion Week was officially canceled, but Mintdesigns rebelled and staged their show at an old printing plant near the Tokyo Bay (holy crap) and up on narrow steel walkways (double holy crap). But when the show started, and the lights went out and the models walked in, glowing, it was something else. We needed to move on, and this helped us all do it (fun fact: they originally intended for this collection to be black, but made it colorful instead).

ミントデザインズのコレクションでミーシャがいちばん好きなのは、椅子モチーフと銃の的が当てられたウサギが登場したやつ。かなりシュールで大好きだった！なんでこのときのミントのコレクションを全部買わなかったのかって後悔するくらい好き。

One of my absolute favorite collections by Mintdesigns, of abstract chairs and that bunny rabbit in a bullseye. I am kicking myself for not buying everything from this one.
