コスモス中敵がつくっても構わないエッジィな若手ブランド、LEONARD WONG。豪華な生地で、複雑に構築的なデザインを打ち出すことが特徴だ。そして、注目したいのがその世界観！彼自身の周りに寄せるコラボ相手で最強なファッションワールドを築き上げている。先日発表された”エキスピリメンタル”(実験的)というラインのコラボレーションも、シューズアーティストのピーターポップス(Peter Popps) を迎えている。次の相手は アヤバンビだし、毎回濃いメンバーが名を連ねる。
Leonard Wong is the newest name in the ring of punch-you-in-the-face serious fashion. And this boy punches hard. His talent not only lies in effortlessly piecing together intricate patterns of noble fabrics for statement pieces, but he’s also got an eye for building up a family of collaborators making a greater force to be reckoned with. In fact, he’s just released photos from his newest “Experimental” line, in collaboration with shoe-artisan Peter Popps, and next up is AyaBambi. Let’s take a trip outta this world….

日本発のブ ランドではあるけれど、日本を代表したいというより、「自由」を代表したい。”幅広く、無国籍というか、インターナショナルなブランドにしたいんです”と 彼は語る。実際、国内より海外の方が反応もよく、取引先も海外が多いのも確か。”国内マーケットがまだ追い付いてないなんて言われた”と彼が言っていた。 次のデスティネーションというと？ロンドン、パリ、中国などで活躍に励むそう。
最新コレクションはピーターポップスとコラボレーション。彼が作り出す靴は、基本的にワイルドで奇抜。なんでしょう…いざ動き出しそうな生きたオブジェのほど、魂の宿っている作品。
The latest from Leonard Wong is his couture line, with the theme of “Cell Segregation” meaning a kind of rebirth, showing how he plans to take this experimental line to bigger and better heights. His aesthetic is maxi-minimalistic in black and white with sturdy geometrical shapes as the foundation.
Although Leonard Wong hails from Tokyo, he’s less interested in becoming a poster-boy for its fashion industry, and more of one for the country of fashion (nee artistic) freedom. “I want to be international..rather, nation-less,” he said. He’s got more stores clamoring for his pieces outside of Japan than inside anyway. In fact, it’s his home country that might be the most difficult sell, “I’m told the market isn’t ready for me yet,” he said. So it’s off to much wider pastures, with his eyes set on London, Paris and China.
For his newest collection he collaborated with shoe designer extraordinaire Peter Popps who lives for aesthetic over function (I’m reminded of the adage, “You can be comfortable when you’re dead!”). His shoes are universally mind-blowing and despite being completely inanimate, that have an unmistakable animalistic energy. Check out Peter Popps’ page for more.
こういった素敵なコラボレーション相手は、ファッションアイコンのLily Gatins (NY出身、北京在住)のつながりが多いそう。彼女は何気なくレオナルドウォングの服をファッションウィーク中に着用できたりして、まるで彼女のために作 られたピースかのように似合っている（パリコレ中にルマレーでカフェったら遠くからLilyを目撃したことが何回もあるけど、パワーを感じる！）
さて、次はどんな面白いことをしてくれるのかというと、アヤバンビのビデオ、パフォーマンスのコスチュームを提供するという。アヤバンビはこの服を 着用するためにあたらしく振り付けも考えたようだ。彼女たちは、動きが制限される作りの衣装なのにも関わらず、かっこいいからと希望したようだ。デザイ ナーにとってこんなに嬉しい事はない！さらに、中国の人気女優の最新映画の衣装も担当するらしい。
レオナルドウォングの可能性は無限に広がっている。そのコスモスを超えた知名度があがるだろう！
Another fascinating collaborator Leonard Wong is calling friend is fashion icon Lily Gatins, who is from NYC but resides in Beijing. She is known for being extra-outre, even wen it comes to getting a coffee in Le Marais in Paris (as I spotted her a mile away during fashion week). She wears Leonard Wong’s works like they were made for her.
As for what is next, Leonard Wong just finished creating costumes for a video and performance by dance icon superstars AyaBambi. “They created new choreography that would be able to work the best with my outfits because they wanted to wear them…not the other way around,” he said. A designers’ dream! Also, he’s been tapped by a Chinese megastar actress for some clothes for her next film.
For Leonard Wong, the sky’s the limit when you’re building your own super-slick rocketship to fame.
