KILLING IT WITH HUMOR: “GROUND ZERO” MAKES FORMAL GUNDAM WEAR, MOCKS DISNEY & CHANEL AND COMES OUT KING.
日本と西欧のポップカルチャーをユーモアで切り裂ける香港 x UK x パリ発ブランド「GROUND ZERO」。フォーマルウェアーにガンダムのプリントも優雅!!
So there’s a weekly Hong Kong-based fashion magazine called KETCHUP and in the summer a few years ago I was looking at a cover that featured a brand called “Ground Zero”. The outfit on it was a white body-conscious dress with a Gundam-like figurine print that was a bit spacey, anime, edgy, and stuck in my mind like molasses. I couldn’t read Chinese so couldn’t make head or tails of it, but I ran into Ground Zero again at a select shop in New York City that winter…. “What IS this brand??” I asked the sales assistant. “Just a London label”, they said. Ohhh-kay, I thought. I knew that couldn’t be it.

The label takes POP-culture and pokes fun at it like a kid with a deathwish pokes a beehive. They mostly center around Japanese and Americana-pop, and rearrange it into casual attire with sleek, elegant underpinnings (Gowns, business suits and Chanel jackets!).

In fact, the Ground Zero story is much more international, and interesting than “Just a London label”. It’s designed by two (quite handsome) brothers, Phillip and Eric Chu. They grew up in Hong Kong and, while they were interested in fashion enough to do customization on their own clothes in HS, Eric went to study graphic design while Phillip stole away to the UK to “study business”. The story goes that his family thought he was “studying business” when he actually was enrolled in fashion design course. Ohhh, snap.
Lucky for us, it gave birth to the Ground Zero label, and they are so very quickly rising up in the ranks! Last season in Paris they even held their first fashion show, which I was lucky to attend because I thought it was fantastic. Gundam business suits! High-end wear for those Akihabara-mix style girls popping up in Tokyo these days.
ブランド設立までの話となるとこれまた興味深いもので、

Amazing!
Needed this yesterday.
これ♥
Past seasons have been so much fun as well. Check out how they make fun of Disney and Karl Lagerfeld in one breath. Wut Berlin in Aoyama tends to carry the fall/winter collections for GZ for awhile now. Check em out, especially if you’re going to be in Paris next month!
そしてもちろん、
I have these Ground Zero x Kiroic platform shoes above and they are S’AMAZING! So light and easy to wear.
上のグラウンドゼロxKIROICコラボ靴を持っています!すごいでしょ?実は軽くて、めっちゃ履きやすいのよ〜

OMG Misha, all the photos here are my fashion inspiration waaaay back in my college days when everybody else thought my ideas are too bizarre! I LOVE THEM ALL! The Karl Lagerfeld, the postcard, the doodles, Alice in Wonderland… THE BLUE PORCELAIN CHINA Pattern(I call it BLUE WILLOW CHINA hehe) I used to get barely passing grades in my “Apparel Design” classes and always get a comment from my professors like… “Marketable?”, “Too literal”, “Wear-ability?” but I didn’t care LOL I’ll design what I inspires me haha!
I feel so validated right now seeing all of these… Apparently, I share ideas with great visionaries too ^_^
