極美。時には極痛。そんな「キラーヒール」への思い。Extreme beauty. Extreme pain. We can agree they’re “Killer Heels”.

先月、ファッションウィークのためにきびしーーーい寒さのNYにいた。なるべく室内に引きこもっておとなしくしてた。ショッピングデーなんてもってのほかで、むしろ寒すぎて店から店へとはしごするその一瞬でも死にそうだったから、ちょっとした空き時間も買い物に行く気になんてなれなかった。(いろんな人に話してるけど、本当に顔がひりひり痛むような寒さ！) でも、それでもどうしても行きたい展覧会があった。それは遥々ブルックリンで開かれてた”Killer Heels展”。この展示は好評のため延長されたし、いろんな人に”絶対行くべき！”とおすすめされたもの。地下鉄の階段を上がると、少なくても10センチは雪が積もっていた。それを見た瞬間、エキシビションに合わせたヒールを履いてこようか迷ったけど、Y3のフラットなミリタリーブーツにして正解だと感じた。その午後、展示されてたシューズの美しさに圧倒されて、豪雪のNYなのにもかかわらず、あの不安定なヒールをはきたい気分がわいた…

It was killer cold in New York City during fashion week last month. Moving less, staying inside, was my mantra. In fact, I didn’t even make a shopping day or even shopping afternoon or hour… the idea of stepping out between stores and getting the shock of the cold made my system shut down just thinking about it (I keep telling people, “It stings, like piranhas nibbling at your face”). But there was one place I absolutely wanted to get out to: The “Killer Heel” exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. It had been extended until Mar 1 and everyone told me it couldn’t be missed. Exiting the subway, there was at least 10 inches of snow on the ground. I considered wearing an homage to the exhibit, but I pounded that pavement in flat Y3 military boots. By the end of my afternoon, I found myself a little more on my tippy toes, feeling the awe and beauty of the heels there.

エキシビションは、ヒールの歴史を追って展示されていた。どのように歴史がスタートしたか？メンズが着用するものとして始まったヒール。最初は乗馬の際に履くシューズだったが、次第にファッションに取り込まれるようになったそう。 その後、ヒールが実用的なものではなくなり、女性の軽薄な行動によって流用された。

古代の靴をモダンな靴と同じようなスタイルで展示していたその方法に感動した。ビジューで覆われたミュウミュウやプラダのきらびやかなシューズがあった。

それから、イタリアのチョピンも見た。これは、床の汚れや水から避けるために履かれたもので、インディアンシューズから伝わったもの。厚底プラットフォームUNIFsとか東京ボッパーとか、現在注目を集めるシューズブランドも、チョピンの厚底からインスピレーションを受けていると思う。

The exhibit follows the history of the heel, from how they began as mesnwear (the heels were worn for keeping shoes in saddle straps and carried over into fashion) and then when they became impractical, women pilfered them for their frivolity (Silly women. But I personally think suits are uncomfortable and impractical, and you don’t see me preferring them over a long skirt and sweater).

I adored how the exhibit would show an historical ancient shoe, next to a modern one done in a similar style. There were many bijoux-encrusted Miumiu and Pradas here.

We saw Italian chopines, which apparently came from Indian shoes worn in the bathhouses to stay above the water. Now we wear our uber-thick creepers, UNIFs and Tokyo Boppers inspired by their vertiginous platforms.

私の身体にはヒールのせいで出来た傷がいくつもある。跡に残ってしまったものもあるし、スネは怪我してぼこぼことしてしまった。あれはあるパーティのときのこと、ルブタンを履いて、両手にはシャンパンとクラッチバックを持ちよちよち歩いてた。また別のとき、線路の道の階 段、まさに最後の段で踏み外して派手に転んだのを覚えている。リルリリーのプラットフォームのときは、横から誰かに激突されて頭から知らない人へ突っ込ん だ。ウラハラで買ったそのビンテージヒールは雨の日に濡れて段ボールみたいに弱くなり、裸足になったな。

I can count the number of scars I have on my feet, hands, and elbows from spills in heels. Some are still very dark, and my shin is bumpy from the cracks. I remember that time going legs in the air wearing Louboutins at the reception party, balancing champagne and a clutch in my hands. The time I tripped on the *last* stair on the walkway over the train tracks onto the cement. The Lillilly platforms I was in when I sideswiped the side of one and went reeling headfirst into a stranger. And those vintage kitten heels from Ura-hara that when they got rained on, literally distinergrated under my feet on an escalator, leaving me panicked and wondering if I was going to be chewed up at the top.

でもヒールはミーシャに”機会”もくれた。ノリタカタテハラのピンク色スカイハイプラットフォームを、装苑の撮影で履かせて頂いた。今振り返って思うと、確かにその靴を履いて街を歩き回ったりもできた。(ガガより前にね！笑) ”ヒールなしじゃ生きられない！コンビニにだってヒールで行くわ！”っていう自分の宣言に耳をダンボにしてる人がいっぱいいたっけ。笑 わたしのスネかわいそう… それでもやっぱりシューズやヒールが大好き。ミーシャの私物のシューズコレクションやここ数年のスナップした面白いシューズをインスタで紹介している ( #mishashoecollection で）。

まだ日本に上陸するかは未定。エキシビションで見たお気に入りもいくつかアップ！（なんだか、写真撮影OKだったことにうれしい驚き)。きっとこれを見たあとはあなたもつま先までおしゃれしたくなるはず。

But heels also gave me my first break. I wore some pink, sky-high Noritaka Tatehana heel-less platforms for a photoshoot in an issue of SOEN and trudged in them around town without fail (pre-Gaga. Hah). Circa that time, there were many soundbytes of me proclaiming, “I will never go without heels! I wear heels to the conbini!” Oh, how my bumpy shins would like to have a word with me… I still love shoes and crazy heels, and you can see a grand collection of my own and others’ snaps over the years on Istagram ( at #mishashoecollection)

I have put here some of my favorites from the exhibit. No word yet on if it’s going to travel. Perhaps after reading this. you’ll feel a little higher on your toes, too.
