H&M 2013 DESIGN WINNER MINJU KIM IS A HORROR-MANGA-LOVING MONSTER DESIGNER. KAWA-KOWAI!!!

きゃわコワい！！！H&M 2013年度デザインアワードを優勝したKIM MINJUはホラー漫画好きなモンスターガール！この意外なコレクションは秋冬発売することに！

A designer friend of mine Niels Peeraer posted a plea on Facebook, “Please vote for Minju Kim to win the H&M Designer 2013 award! We need some fresh and inspirational fashion out there!”  So I clickety click through…. and I am faced with a plethora of rather casual, minimalistic styles, and then there was Minju with over exaggerated shapes and fuzzy creature-like designs. VOTED! Then forgotten.

Until yesterday, when the winner was announced by a panel of experts… girlfriend took home the BIG prize, becoming the winner of the 2013 H&M Design Award!! I actually thought when I saw it, “Sadly, there’s no way she will win.” How little faith I have in the industry. Minju is still a student, studying at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts and is in her last year. The prize for winning this award is a capsule collection produced with H&M that will go on sale this Autumn 2013 (but ONLY in Europe. DAMMITALL! F&&%$#!”).

そうしてそこからどれだけか経って、昨日今年のH&Mカプセルコレクションのコラボデザイナーが発表された。するとそこには、なんとあのMinjuの名前が堂々と載っているではないか！！正直なところ、投票が行われていたときには彼女がここで勝ち抜いていくのは厳しいだろうと予想していた。その理由は、彼女がまだアントワープで現役の学生であることと、ファッション業界では本物の才能が正当に評価されることがめったに無いからだったのだが、そんな逆境をも押しのけ、見事彼女が勝者となり、泣く子も黙るH&Mとのコラボデザイナーの座を射止めたのだった。販売は今年の秋から、ヨーロッパのみで行われるよう(なんだってーーーーーー？！) 

Her collection looks bright and happy and all warm and fuzzy but it’s actually quite sinister. Titled “Dear My Friend”, it came about when Minju started observing her friends and others around her, determining who (and what) they really are. In other words, she concluded there is a darker, less appealing side to everyone….and they are deformed creatures that look like a mix of Where the Wild Things Are and Care Bears.

彼女が今回発表した“Dear My Friend”コレクションは、鮮やかなカラーとハッピーでフワフワで、それでいてどこかダークな雰囲気が漂っているのが印象的だ。今回の製作にあたって彼女がまず行ったのは、自分の回りにいる友人達をよく観察することだったそう。彼ら、彼女達をよく観察しその本質に迫ろうとした時、誰もがハッピーな一面とは別にどこかダークな一面を持っているということに気付いたのだとか。その二面性を洋服で表現したのが、今回の“怪獣たちのいるところ”と“ケアベア”をかけあわせたようなこれらの洋服だったということだ。

That’s no surprise because the South Korea native is a huge fan of the averse and horror… this collection was actually directly inspired by Junji Ito who is a famous Japanese horror manga artist. I have read his work and seen his movies in the past and it will give you nightmares. “Uzumaki” is a good place to start for movies, although Tomie is probably his most famous. If you dare take a peek at his manga, The Enigma of Amigara Fault (阿弥殻断層の怪) will stick with you for a lifetime (that last scene! Gah!).

その他に、今回の製作でもっと直接的に影響をうけたアーティストとして彼女が挙げた一人に、日本の有名なホラー漫画家Ito Junjuさんがいる。韓国の方は概してこういった二面性を匂わせるアートや文学が好きな印象があるが、こちらのアーティストもざっとインターネットで検索をしたら次ら次へと出てくるおどろおどろしい画像。特に私が読んだ“渦巻き”という作品は、生涯忘れられないほどの衝撃をうけたので、これから見てみるという人が心して臨むことをおすすめします。もっと勇気がある人は、“阿弥殻断層の怪”なんかもいいかも。

Minju herself, according to those who know her, is apparently actually a really happy and freewheeling girl– sounds like she’s got the perfect double-sided personality to become the next “IT”-ingenue!

ちなみに、彼女の友人のはなしによると彼女自身はとてもハッピーで自由な性格だそう。なるほど、彼女自身が一番の二面性の持ち主だということか （やはりデザイナーに向いているかもw）
