GETTING SPIFFY AND NEW WITH OLD SCHOOL: HARCOZA’s “ASAKUSA BEAT” 2013 SS

I don’t know why I thought of talking about this today, I guess it could be the red and the green reminding me of the Christmas holidays, or the traditional time of Japanese new year, but here is the lookbook/campaign for Harcoza’s new 2013 SS collection “Asakusa Beat”

Shot in the most well-known traditional area of Japan at the Sensoji-temple and the famous Kaminari-mon gate, it tells a story of a true mix of old school Japan clashing with 2013. Designer Haruko Okano studied at Parsons in NYC before opening a shop in Daikanyama and starting her eponymous line “Harcoza”. She always tends to mix in parts of tradition and pop-culture into her collections which until now have kind of come and gone without adhering to any real market season. She used a lot of textiles that take reference to old drawings, games, cards, motifs and even used techniques like she did with the “kogin” necklaces that ar made from a popular needlework technique popular in the Edo period.

And don’t forget Haruko’s shop “Harcoza” in Daikanyama. It’s a mid to high-end shop that along with her own brand also carries an ecclectic selection of goods all over, from Berlin to Asia. Unlike a lot of small select boutiques, this one is very airy, bright and easy to wander into.
