Does New York Do Tokyo Better? The New “Stardust Lounge” Club at Maison O Is a Dream-Like Crazy 80s Tokyo Reprise
NYCの新OPENクラブがバブリーな東京を再現：STARDUST LOUNGE at MAISON O。こっちの方の東京が実物よりエネルギッシュに輝くかも？！
I’ve always thought that Tokyo needed to look like “Tokyo”. I mean, there’s this image of Tokyo being wild and crazy and pretty weird and then when people actually come, they may be disappointed to find that it’s quite tame and conservative. When stylish people come to the city, they don’t want to go to a NYC-style bar, they want to go to a *Japanese* place. And if you want more fun than a Japanese-washoku restaurant, what is left? Just Trump Room, Red Bar, Casbah, a few Golden Gai places..? In fact, without Robot Restaurant, Tokyo would be without a funky spot to go to just be weird.
So it’s funny that I’ve found the perfect “Tokyo” club, but it’s here in New York City.
東京に欠けているもの。
夜間に楽しめる、ステレオタイプな東京の場所。どういうことかと言うと、東京に来たことの無い人々が描く東京のイメージって、ワイルドでクレイジーだとか、怪しいとか、変わってるとか… 。それで実際にやってきた人たち、特に外国人が現実の東京を目のあたりにしたとき、多くの人が失望してしまう。みんな飼いならされた動物のようにおとなしかったり、街行く人が誰も同じだったり、保守的過ぎる部分。スタイリッシュな人たちが街へ行くとき、彼らは日本人が好むようなニューヨークやパリ、いわゆる海外スタイルのバーへは行きたがらない。やはりザトーキョーがいいみたい。それで、もしみなさんが和食レストランよりももっと楽しみたいとか、違うものがいいってときに、果たして他に何があるだろうか？トランプルーム、レッドバー、カスバ、新宿ゴールデン街… 。ロボットレストラン無しでは、東京はファンキーなスポットでも無ければ、ただのヘンテコな街になってしまう。
今回私は、これは面白いと思った、完璧な東京のクラブを見つけた！… だけどそれは残念ながら、今私がいる、ここニューヨークでのお話。
It’s in a restaurant called Maison-O which is a high-design Izakaya-style joint that is so new they just launched their website maisononyc.com . We had some food there first, including the biggest gyoza I’ve ever seen, and saikyo-yaki. Then, we get led through several backdoor bars and down some stairs, and in there is the “Stardust Lounge“. It’s the location of the old and famous Kenmare Club, but it’s been given a total makeover: welcome to a dream-like neo-80s Tokyo. Each corner and room is done up in a different style, with the main room sporting a replica of a subway car. There’s a Japanese elmentary school classroom with graffiti all over the desks and chalkboard. The “park” is supposed to be Shinjuku Gyoen and has benches, astroturf, and a private karaoke machine.
ハイデザインな居酒屋スタイルのレストラン、MaisonO の中にあって、まだできて間もない、新しい場所で、つい最近ウェブサイト maisononyc.com を開設したばかりのこのお店。私たちはまず最初に食事をすることにした。その中には未だかつて見たこと無いくらい大きいジャンボギョウザがあった！あとはアットホーム的な味の西京焼きとか。そのあと私たちはドアから出た裏にあるいくつかのバーへと通り抜け…。そしてそこには… 『スターダストラウンジ』が。ロケーションはというと、歴史があり名もある Kenmare Club のところ。だけどそこは、完全に変身してた。
「Neo 80’s Tokyo へようこそ。」って感じ。
それぞれのコーナーと部屋は、レトロな地下鉄車両のレプリカを備えたメインルームを筆頭に、全く違うスタイルに仕上がっていた。あるところは日本の小学校の教室が再現されていた。全ての机と黒板には面白い落書きが描かれている。”park” と名の付いた部屋は、新宿御苑のようで、芝生のカーペットが敷かれていて、ベンチがある。それから、プライベートで使えるカラオケマシーンも。
Theres seating along the wall and a little stage as well. That night DJ Keiichiro was spinning, and it was just my luck to find out about this place because I had bumped into him at Starbucks only 2 hours earlier when he spilled the secret. Stardust lounge is barely open to the public, and is launching officially probably next month. I got to meet one of the owners and also the designer of the space, Jason Volenec, who was happy to see “Tokyo” getting a boost in population.
It’s all good, but this “second” Tokyo is missing one thing: propriety on the Karaoke box. Right as I was leaving, some guy took the mic to sing an obscure new wave song, killing the mood. *tsk tsk* Too early for that, man 反省しろーーーー笑
メインルームでのこと。その夜は私の友達の DJ Keiichiro がまわしてた。そしてそれはこの場所を見つけることができて、私はとてもラッキーだったと思わせることだった。なぜなら、Keiichiro がまわすって２時間前にスターバックスで偶然再会したから。スターダストラウンジは、多分来月には大々的に開放されるとは思うけど、現時点ではまだ、知る人ぞ知る場所で、かろうじて公に公開されている状況。私はそこで、自分の仕事に大きな誇りを持っていて自信に満ち溢れた、その場所のオーナーでありデザイナーでもある Jason Volenec と会うことになっていた。
そこは何もかも全てが素晴らしかった。ただしかしこの『セカンドトウキョウ』、一つだけ重大なミスがあった。それは…メインルームの カラオケでのある出来事。時間も程よくなってきたので私はそろそろ出ようかと立ち、去ろうとすると、それを察知した一人の男がおもむろにマイクを握り始め、なんだかよくわからないニューウェーブソングを歌い始めた。… 今までの良い感じのdjプレイも場の空気も台無し。チッ、チッ、それはクラブではカッコよくないよ、お兄さん… 。アメリカ人はカラオケマナーがまだまだみたい 笑
