COMMITTING THE SIN OF ALL SINS: WRITING ABOUT A SHOW I NEVER SAW. DIOR 2013 SS, VIA PURGATORY.
I am doing something really bad, something that I said I would NEVER do, because I have integrity, dammit, and those of us with any integrity left in the blogoshpere and journalist-phere combined need to uphold SOME semblance in moral object to reviews. But I’m doing it. I am writing a report on a show that I did not see. I was not in the audience, I have not seen the clothes. But here I am.
This was the conundrum: I’m in Paris with the blog and I was with my partner in crime, photographer Mami Tanabe. See, it’s tough enough to get invites for one person, let alone two…from a blog….from Japan (where fashion blogs aren’t exactly held in high regard, especially with luxury brands). So I had the DIOR invite in my hand, made out to me, and I was going to see my first ever DIOR show in my life (made even more historical since it was Raf Simon’s first Pret a Porter collection)!!!
And yet, it wasn’t meant to be. If I went without Mami, I would have no original photos to post and to me, that meant no report at all. So I made the executive decision to send Mami in my stead. “This is a defining fashion moment, soak it in! And get some good pics!” was my decree.
When it was done, I ask her how it was, “Well, I couldn’t see much past the shoulders. The prints were nice.”
D’oh!!!
Therefore I wasn’t expecting much from her photos, until she sent them to me. True, the show pics were not magazine quality, but leafing through her pics I felt the exuberance of the fashion show experience. The people, their colors, their expressions, their incessant desire to either be deathly bored or on the edge of their seat trying to snap a f&$%#! iPhone photo. Mami’s photos were brilliant, and I felt myself becoming the voyeur with big bright eyes into my own glamorous-seeming life. “I wish I was her, at the show!”….I know, right?! Me too!!!
As for the collection?
I did love the peeks of metallics, and the most perfect silhouette ever, the flare. Please bury me in my grave in a fit and flare. The colors were optimistic and bold, and yes, Iwannaseethemupclose!
Oh, but ung, uffffffff, gahhhhhhh…who dafuq left their front row seat agape?!?!
But the story is here with the experience. And the people!
Anna dello Russo!
Lynn Yaeger!
The original street snapper Bill Cunningham!
Bill Cunningham!
And his many, many proteges!
It’s like Mami copied and pasted her in.
Thank you for the experience Mami, and even though you got to go, I don’t regret it! There’s always next season ;)
Speaking of DIOR, they have released a beautiful magazine yesterday and it’s kindly all translated into Japanese. Here are some highlights:

Great story! I love the photos- they are very personal and show an intimate quality of the show. Most look so bored to be there- ah, what a chore.
Because attending a fashion show is like going to the DMV. Oh so awful!!! >_> <_<
