I have found the most comfortable avantgarde fashion in the history of things.
The idea of “comfort” comes up a lot in the discourse of avantgarde fashion, and it makes sense; avantgarde is never meant to be comfortable, it is the antithesis of comfort. It’s is about design and aesthetic. High fashion is not *supposed* to be comfortable!!
The Comme des Garcons fall/winter collection is all about being snug and protected in layers of knits of sweatshirt fabric. There are knots and waves and stuffed bumpers all piled up like a hundred warm hugs. I suppose even Rei Kawakubo felt the stinging cold of this year’s harsh winter climate because this looks warm and snuggly.
And although the runway presentation can end up looking quite harsh, I think these clothes actually work better off the runway, especially when it comes to the details and textiles that make them incredible works of fashion. Check them out, and know that when the weather starts to get chilly in the fall, get a Comme sweater and challenge yourself to find that happy balance between being unique and being comfortable. It IS possible.
