AT JAPAN’S FASHION SCHOOLS, CREATIVITY IS KING. SEE IT IN ACTION AT THE TFAC GRAD SHOW 2013
東京服飾専門学校ではクリエイティビティが命。卒業ファッションショーで見せてくれたそのファンタジックな世界観とは・・?

Right now in Japan, it is the time of the year when students finish their years and start new ones, or graduate and move into jobs come April. If you attend the graduation fashion shows at any of Japan’s fashion school, you’ll notice very quickly that concept and creativity are at the very forefront, while saleability is a far away thought. I think this is because internships are not a part of course curriculum in Japan, so students are not thrust into reality so soon, as well as dealing with wearing a school uniform for most of their lives probably makes them giddy to be able to create as fantastical pieces as they can.

So I was treated to such “beyond reality” fashion as a guest judge for the Tokyo Fashion Art College (TFAC) graduation show last Friday. TFAC is a cozy school that offers a variety of courses within the fashion discipline. Everything about the school is quite modern with sandblasted wood walkways, and studio lights everywhere so you’re always on “the catwalk”.

It was my second time being a judge, which is basically being able to choose my favorite piece and awarding a huge boost of confidence to the deserving young designer. Students work in teams to finish off the show, which are all siphoned into one of a handful of “scenes” or themes. There was the victoriana-gothic scene, a boys “dandy” scene, an LSD-fueled “kawaii” scene and more. I have written about the differences studying fashion in the US and Japan before, and one thing I mentioned was working in teams rather than being “every designer for himself”. Here too, teamwork and cooperation are required and self-propagation is squashed.

I enjoyed the scene that took wearable works of art as inspiration, as well as the acid kawaii scene (it was called “different spaces”, which makes me wonder if they were inspired by the 2.5 dimension?!).

The steampunk scene was interesting too, because I just wrapped up a photoshoot for a magazine with some steampunk accents. Will it makes its way to mainstream style?

My choice for the top prive was for Horage-san and her piece. I loved the vinyl jacket with oversize collar, and skirt that employed searing colors made out of sporty fabrics and had a beautiful parasol flare to it. It was made quite well, and I think I could pull off the jacket or skirt sometime myself! There were others I could imaging myself wearing sometime, too.

Before the show started we were treated to the most amazing performance… by a group of Japanese male models/dancers called “BEIB”, they danced but they were doing MODEL moves. So, end-of-the-runway-turns, taking off and putting on a jacket while walking, and adjusting clothes. But…dance! At one point, some froze like mannequins and the others pulled accessories out of a bag and performed VMD (visual merchandising/mannequin styling) on them! IT WAS MINDBLOWING. These guys definitely need to perform at some fashion afterparties. They were professional “ZOOLANDERS”. I demand a cameo for them in the next film! It was the ultimate walk-off.
Thanks TFAC, and looking forward to more!
