[Friday] I am looking at all of these twitpics, instagrams and snippets of the fashion industry types making their way to the car tradeshow “Tokyo Auto Salon” for the first time to check out a collaborative effort between Lexus and Christian Dada. What a pair! A studded exterior and faint print under the title “Black Leopard”. If it weren’t for it being Dada’s design, it could fall under the “tacky” column very easily, but instead of looking like a gyaru-o car it edges off an uber-cool vibe. Wish I could see it, but the auto salon isn’t really my place…and I have to go to Numero Tokyo for edits…excuses, excuses, I know…汗
$130K of fancy (I like how the license plate reads “Lexus” backwards)
So speaking of Dada, I didn’t write about it previously because there wasn’t a show for 2013 SS during fashion week in Tokyo, but he DID present a collection.
A last-minute decision to present an installation saw designer Morikawa taking his highly sought-over hand-made couture samples being suspended in monoliths of ice. To see any details, one had to get really close risking a stuck eyeball to the ice, but it was a brilliant way for Morikawa to show that he is still an artist at heart, even if he is also producing more and more commercial pieces as he goes along. It is a sign of wisdom and savvy.
I was concerned that the water would ruin his pieces…like, REALLY worried. I mean, I have to borrow those pieces for shoots and things, man! But Morikawa knows what he’s doing and can produce another piece if need be.
He released a proper lookbook of the men’s collection, titled “Substance” immediately after.
