This particular episode of my column running in SOEN magazine is probably my favorite. That’s because it’s also revealing something very personal that changed my mind and therefore changed my life. And saying it changed my mind is an understatement. It literally BLEW my mind (I love the japanese translation for this: “fish scales fell out of my eyes.” Hah. But I digress )
So the message is simple but powerful, and here it is:
We do not “find” ourselves, we create ourselves.
For some reason we are told over and over again that we have to discover who we are… But that is the opposite of reality. You are basically waiting for yourself to show up. But uh, you are already there.
A simple nudging of the words and it takes on such a completely different, complex, eye-opening meaning: you create yourself. You can “become” anything… You can learn you be more sociable, more courageous, to be a badass or a goodgirl, to be more confident, to dance, to be happy.
You create those skills and mindset, you aren’t born a punk or a gyaru, or a hip-hopper…. That’s up to you. So no more trying to “discover” yourself! So now you can get to creating yourself into the most incredible work of art ever.
Check out the article in English online and in the newest SOEN issue is my latest column too.
