“Mame” is a few-years-old brand that is run by pixie-sized designer Maiko Kurogouchi…but I end up accidentally calling her “Mame”-chan all the time and then having to apologize when I realize I’m calling her “little bean” as if it’s her name. And although mame *is* the name of her label, her work is less of the edamame variety and more of the kick-ass magic beanstalk kind. This is because right out of the young designer box she was targeted by stylish fashion editors for her feminine silk lace work and the contrasting hand-cut and stitched vinyl and acrylic bags that put her into the category “innovator”.
This season I stopped by her exhibition during fashion week…on Monday, before it all turned into one hectic meltdown… and saw that she has evolved into color, this time a beautiful lavender/periwinkle purple. The lace pants/shorts were absolutely excquisite and I was already on my way to putting in a personal order when I caught sight of the price tag. To be fair, these are beautifully made, with real original lace patterns in the highest quality textile. *sigh*. Even Mame-chan admitted the customers for those reside in more challenge-friendly metropolises like Hong Kong and not Tokyo.
The prize of her exhibitions is always her acrylic bags. She described it as “Gundam Chic” last time, and that caught on with some very interesting sub-groups (cool shit is cool and transcends barriers of all fandom). I was kicking myself for not ordering a neon yellow clutch last season…so gonna get one as a personal favor. And the black one with a chain has my name written ALL OVER IT. Done. Price tags be damned!
And her lookbook! They actually took this in the mountains…not `shopped. “This model was a pro among pros…. and it was feezing. Really cold. Thank god,” said Mame….err…Maiko.
