The number of brands vying for our attention and dollars has frankly gotten out of hand. Some brands even resort to calling themselves “plain”, tryingt to grasp onto the safest middle-market possible while grabbing attention from the lowest denominator.
But for a fashion brand, having that one “centerpiece” is vital to surviving. It could be a concept, an avantgarde design ethos, or even a designer who himself can get the attention to his brand. No matter what it is, it BETTER be interesting.
So it doesn’t pain me at all to say, “Here’s another Japanese brand, take notice!”. Because it’s only care in the world is… skirts. Skirts, skirts, and more and more skirts.
(continued, 5F-6F) We’re taking a bottom-to-top, inside-out tour of possibly the best store in the world, Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo. If you’re unfamiliar with the shop, you might want to start with the digest version I’ve written here for ANA, for the uninitiated (in English). See the artwork, the exclusives, and why it’s the world’s ultimate shopping destination. So settle in and slowly suck on the eye candy. 1F-2F is here.3F-4F is here.
We’re taking an over-the-top extreme tour of possibly the best store in the world, Dover Street Market Ginza in Tokyo. If you’re looking for something casual, you’re on the wrong continent, bub. But you can get a much easier-to-digest version I’ve written here for ANA, for the uninitiated (in English). You might want to start there first. However, if you wanted a total bottom to top look at what DSM is offering, the artwork, the exclusives, and why it’s the ultimate shopping destination, then settle in and slowly suck on the eye candy.
The Comme des Garcons Dover Street Market is a long time coming… 8 years in fact, since it opened in London.
Of course Tokyo has never been deprived of CdG blessings…it is cheaper here than anywhere else, and we have several outlets including a flagship, the Trading Market on Omotesando, numerous guerrilla stores throughout the years, and even a 10 Corso Como. ..well, until that closed down last month. Still, the bitching and moaning about no DSM was mum.
But that’s OK, because now we have a *6* story Dover Street Market, which is the most artistic and experimental of any store you’ll find in the world. I knew this opening would be big… not only for Tokyo, but for the world who was anticipating this after being teased with the idea for over a year now.
It was also the largest event Tokyo has seen in 2012 so far. I heard Stephen Jones would be in town with his hats, and so would Kim Jones, to christen his corner dedicated to Louis Vuitton menswear. It was something not to be missed— and as expected people came out in droves! Even Mami “mamitan” Tanabe joined me; it was wonderful to have her around again! Check out her photos of the opening reception below!

Verbal at the Louis Vuitton corner, wearing the newest collection. He was telling me about a pin badge he designed with Kim that plays music through headphones. Only 30 will be made so watch out for them here! Verbal、ルイ ヴィトンのコーナーでの一コマ。最新コレクションから品定め中の模様。ピンバッジをキムとデザインをしたものだそうで、ヘッドホンに繋ぐと音が流れるんだそう。限定３０個のみ生産！
Stephen Jones telling me about his collection. Me: “Stephen, I LOVE hats!” Stephen: “Dear, I couldn’t tell!”
We then all went out for a night cap after the party.
Hey! A bunch of stuff happened the past week! Let’s see what.
Check out all of the brands “collaborating” with Comme des Garcons on their imminent Dover Street Market Ginza opening in March. (Comme des Garcons) Nawa Kohei?! Adam Kimmel?! Alexander McQueen?! It’s a veritable who’s who of who is who!
Kobe Collection becomes “Tokyo Runway”, will be working in tandem with Tokyo Fashion Week. (Tokyo Runway) It’s a spinoff of Tokyo Girls Collection (actually, to be fair it came first but TGC helped the genre take off) , and will feature the likes of Ebi-chan and Ai Tominana in brands such as Lanvin en Bleu, SLY, Dresscamp, Jill Stuart and Tracy Reese…but how else will it differ from TGC? Well, pretty much anything could be better than the state of TGC nowadays…(snooze). It happens Mar 20.
Fujifilm (!!) launches anti-aging skin care line “Astral Lift”. (Daily Mail) Noted just to joke about an inevitable Instagram version that transforms your skin with a retro matte, washed-out but warm-filtered look.
44 brands have been announced to show during Tokyo Fashion Week this 2012 AW season. (Tokyo Fashion Week) Going to be a busy week! I can’t wait to see the next collection from my favorite brand Diet Butcher Beautiful Plumpy People Maruyama.
Japan getting two new fashion mags: Richesse for the 40-something well-moneyed set, and Marie Claire. (Fashionsnap) Marie Claire was running here up until it was shuttered just a few years ago. This recovery was faster than it takes most of us to run to the conbini for our chocolate-covered Almonds fix.
That new tower they are building on the east side of Shibuya? It’s called Hikarie and it’s a mall with “Sparkment”. (Hikarie) Sparkment is the word for their curated selection of shops. These include Marc by Marc Jacobs, United Arrows, Bao Bao Issey Miyake, The Conran Shop, a bakery by Joel Robuchon and an American Diner called “EAT” among many others. Hopefully the spark doesn’t include any fire. It opens in April.
