My shop tour of Osaka last weekend continues with Teknopolice. This was the first shop on my list that I knew I needed to hit up because I had seen fleeting photos of it here and there and it gave me an air of CANDY in Shibuya. Now, this is going to be a misnomer though… I assumed it was a little inspired-by shop run by maybe some young guys with a few interesting brands but a crazy Osaka dismeanor that *maybe* would set it apart from CANDY. In other words, I had no clue at all.
Because this place is a BEAST! Perhaps. Even. The best streetwear shop in all of Japan. Which means it could possibly be the best streetwear shop on planet Earth. I came to the realization here that Tokyoites are far more conservatie than I thought. I mean, this is the only metropolis in the world where people wait for a light to change to cross an alley-sized street even where there are no cars. Tokyoites are polite and not as risky as you may think. I suppose Osakans are much more risky… because the avantgardism and powerful color I saw here was incredible.
If I really needed to put how I felt about this shop into a roman alphabet lexicon it would be: asfhkfghklphdsdccsbdjsds. Let’s go through the stages of a visit to Teknopolice.
First stage: curiosity.
I am on the toy floor of Namba City and suddenly I come upon this interesting block. Oh my, look at all of these interesting mannequins. And, pray tell, what is this wall guarding on the other side? Let me see…
Next stage. Bewilderment.
Uuuuwaaaaaah. What planetary solar system have I warped to?? It’s a veritable one-stop candy shop of avant-garde, punk, slick-sally, futurism and collectible used clothing. Planet WHOAH.
Brands I have never heard of from all around the world…DORA ABODI, DV COU2RE, Lisa Shahno, Soo Jin Lee, Jessica Au, Digitaria…
And not just one piece from each collection either, but quite a few to round out the brand AND the more avant-garde pieces from said collection.
そして今までに聞いたこともないようなデザイナーの名前。DORA ABODI, DV COU2RE, Lisa Shahno, Soo Jin Lee, Jessica Au…
Stage 3: Overwhelming panic.
So much stuff! I need it all! Sale?!? Can’t decide. Must breathe. More here?! More there?! AUGH.
They have 4 times the stock of CANDY in the same sized space. You will need to dig. Make sure you block out a good chunk of time first.
Stage 4: Catatonic post-shopping coma.
I wanted every one of these technopunk cuffs
And all of these House of Flora accessories
I would have missed my bullet train home if I didn’t get out of there and didn’t have time to try things on so I ended up with some leather biker gloves and a yellow patent leather bag shaped like a swan with a brass head.
The owner Yabu-san (who I didn’t get to meet) is also the owner of a totally insane-errific toy store. His right-hand man Hanaki told me that he started collecting clothing because he was in a band and ended up getting so much he started the store.
They have their own original brand called Zig ur idol which is Visual Kei Rock-meets-80s clash-meets hipster. I like the skirts for sure— esp that crossword puzzle print.

I noticed that they sell CANDY’s original brand DISBORN as well which made me happy because they are both stores cut of the same cloth but it’s great to see them working together. Hanaki even said he respects CANDY so much because of their restraint in slowly releasing items and updating the website. With that said, Teknopolice gets props for having brands that no other store in Japan has.
I started to make a wishlist from their website and got to opening 30 tabs before my browser crashed. LOOK at these avant-garde items…I am in love. And everything is on sale…SO CHEAP! Bookmarked!

Teknopolice just needs a bigger space..a castle-sized vault to hold all of their treasures and they would rule Japan’s streetwear scene.
