Tomorrow, I`m going to zip myself up in this suitcase and cargo myself over to….PARIS!! For my first EVER season at Paris Fashion Week! #PFW4EVER And I`m taking Mami Tanabe with me for the BEST photos you will ever see.
S’alright, I know how disingenuous this sounds but for someone who works in fashion going to Paris is like a front row ticket to a U2 concert…or getting to the world’s biggest icecream sandwich. Thing is, while I am extremely proud of all of the work I’ve put into my career, with national and international publications like The Japan Times, Kyodo, The Guardian, Syndey Herald, CNN etc on my resume, my work has always focused on Japan and what’s going on there. I wasn’t *needed* outside of Japan. So I pretty much stay put.
But now I truly believe it is time to get out of the “kitchen” and into more rooms. You know, take my own personal filter, which I’ve cultivated through my styling, journalism, and this blog, and apply it to what is happening in this industry around the world. I also ALWAYS look at angles on how it relates to Japan. Seriously, you can take this girl out of Tokyo but you can’t Tokyo out of this girl. Trust.
A LOT of the questions I get from professionals in Tokyo these days are “What do people overseas think about Japanese fashion?” or “What kind of Japanese fashion is popular overseas?”. Well, if I`m never overseas then I can’t really make an informed answer on this inquiry! Recently I tweeted about working on a job overseas and someone actually requested that I come back to Japan and only work there. Gah! This is a problem because I believe being in Tokyo all the time is what keeps Japanese fashion in a bubble and stunts growth. I’d love to see more Japanese designers stepping outside of the island once in a while…
AND! A slightly embarrassing story…
So I`m going to see what’s going on in international fashion with my own eyes…do some work over there, take in the sartorial sights and dress up like I mean it.
So Chloe, Dior, Loewe, Yamamoto, Tsumori, Limi, here I come…! Speaking of, I`m especially excited about seeing Valentino since they outfitted me in these rad shoes to wear during the week. This pair of limited shoes are one of only 100 red “Rockstuds” produced in the WORLD. I am super giddy…exclusivity makes my heart pitter-patter. It’s to mark the opening of their online shoe store that opens TODAY on the 24th (that would be while I’m on the airplane and can’t shop. But I see some rainboots with my name on them.) These babys can only be had on there. By God I may be warming up to kitten heels…so much easier than 13cm platforms that I usually wear!
And for those who are like, “But, but, Japanese fashion!” Well, I have an entire suitcase loaded up with the awesomest Tomo Koizumi outfits ever so *nyan*. See you on the other side of the world!
