Leonard Wong’s aesthetic is a mix of Gareth Pugh and Wong Kar Wai. The slick, futuristic lines and sculpted leather cut with silk fringe and his Asian model muses makes for a label that screams FASHION and gives a damn.
Leonard Wong is of Chinese descent, but graduated from Tokyo’s Bunka Fashion College institute and started his label there in 2013. Before then, he built up cred by receiving numerous accolades including the grand prix at the Tokyo New Designer of the Year, and Air France award and designer as well as best womenswear awards at Bunka Fashion College. Soon he will be going beyond Asia, too, considering the designer will be taking a break for the 2014 seasons to focus on a collection he’ll be presenting in Paris for 2015.
It’s one of the strongest brands for women to come into my own hands in Tokyo in a long while. The leather shapes are created using extensive sculpting techniques, accented with horse hair in some, and PVC in others, for a shot of bad-ass to slip into when the need strikes (I’ll have one for every day of the week, please).
