Kansai Yamamoto Super “Comeback” Pop-up Store at Isetan is Exactly What You Want

 

I am starting off 2014 with a MUTHAFVCKIN BANG y’all. jan 2nd marked the opening of Kansai Yamamoto’s pop-up shop in Isetan Department store. I not only collaborated with him on tights, tees and headpieces, but I also was in charge of the department store’s displays, AND hosted a stage show with him on the same day….

 

私の2014年はめちゃくちゃな勢いと共に幕を開けた。1月2日、伊勢丹に山本寛斎さんのポップアップショップがオープンしたのだ。そこでミーシャは彼とコラボレーションタイツやTシャツ、ヘッドピースを製作しただけでなく、伊勢丹のディスプレイを担当したり、ステージショーに参加したりもした。

Kansai Yamamoto is just settling down after an exceptionally well received exhibition & show at London’s V&A musuem in Nov.. It’s been decades since we’ve seen any of the David Bowie costume designer’s products in the stores. Perhaps refueled by the prospect of a super-powered Tokyo for the Olympics in 2020, Kansai Yamamoto teamed up with Isetan for a incredible start to 2014 awashed in the colorful world of Kansai.

I received the email from his “people” last summer that Kansai himself wanted to have a meeting with me. I was nervous as hell. A collaboration? Inspired by his body of work?? I could do anything??? I didn’t know where to start. In the end I called TOKONE to produce some tights, I created 3 wigs with the “TAKO” face motif in graffiti tattoos, and finally, some luxe t-shirts in two designs. 

…as of the first day, the tees were already almost gone.

Then, from a totally different direction, I was asked by the incredible creative window display company Planks if I would style and coordinate the “stage” mannequins on the Isetan 1st floor. Since I was collaborating with Kansai at the same time, we decided to make it incestuous with some female “kabuki” styling with Kansai Ymamoto’s show pieces and hair accessories made by me and my wigs.

 

I used forks, straws, ribbon and “mizuhiki” decorations made of various materials for a creative take on the new Year x Kabuki theme. Pretty neat, eh?

 

また、嬉しいことに、いつも素晴らしいウィンドウディスプレイを手がけるplanksという会社からも別口で伊勢丹一階のステージに設置するマネキンのスタイリングのオファーが。そこで、ちょうどミーシャか山本寛斎さんとコラボレートするタイミングと重なったため、わたしたちは寛斎さんのショーピースとミーシャのウィッグを使ってレディース歌舞伎スタイリングを組むことに決めました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Finally, to mark the first day of the pop-up shop and the first day isetan is open for 2014, I had a mini stage show with Kansai Yamamoto himself where we talked about inspirations, what he’s up to next (designing a house from the outside to the interior) and more.
