Before the Hisui show last night, I went to see designer Hiroko Itoh and her collection at the Rooms Link exhibition, so I knew what we were in for. It seems that it is not apparent enough by just looking at the clothing. Can you spot the theme? First look at the photos.
“I am melting, as you are melting
I feel something in my gut melting too
This heat, with no smell or color
is melting me in my ignorance.”
The seats were set up like benches in a chapel, which made sense when the stage curtain was opened to reveal a giant surreal interpretation of Peter Paul Rubens’ painting “The Assumption of the Virgin Mary” (1626). You’ll see the Virgin herself is not immune to the radiation. The clothes were bright and seemingly your average spring-like collection, but it had subtle allusions to Hiroko’s theme. The sunflower print was a bit psychedelic looking as it was “melted”, and giant drips graced collars and bags. Afterwards, the audience received sunflower seeds as a parting gift.
“If I, as I melt, is such a sin,
then at least let the sunflowers grow”
