Baz Luhrman’s “The Great Gatsby” has been out for awhile in the US, but it just got it’s Japan premier on the 14th. The day beforehand, Prada threw a huge bash at its Aoyama flagship with 40 of the film’s costumes on display for the Catharine Martin x Miuccua Prada collaboration. These costumes were featured in two party scenes in the film, and these two party scenes are probably the main reason any fashion fan will go see the movie. The clothes were taken from Miuccia Prada’s PRADA and Miu Miu archives but they were re-styled just for the film. Apparently Prada and director Baz were friends for 15 years, since Prada made the suit worn by Leo Dicaprio in the wedding scene in Romeo+Juliet.
I am obsessed with 1920s fashion and art. One word: Erte (above). If movie producers weren’t able to reproduce his work (good luck with that, hey!) then these Miuccia Prada creations are the next brilliant choice.
The 40 outfits are on display at the Aoyama boutique on the 6th floor and throughout the 1st floor until the end of the month. It’s worth it to see all of the characters that wear the outfits and their salacious stories.
The party itself was quite decadent, maybe not roaring 20s decadent, but roaring 20oos decadent. There was enough champagne for eons and everyone was dressed to the tens. Most of the celebs were in Prada ss 13 which is one of my favorite collections, yes, BUT with an excuse to wear 1920s fashion I was disappointed more people didn’t get creative :( I mean, one girl was in Alexander Wang! Wang is great, but at a **20s** party? Imagination, please! I did see Maki Nomiya looking like a million in a gown and Sachiko from SHIMA who was wearing an adorable pink chemise. I went with the lingerie look as well, with a bit of noir in a vintage Limi Feu dress, crsytal studded heels, and hair pinned in metallic “waves”. A little old, a little new.
