A CURIOSITY SHOP FOR THE EXTRA PECULIAR. SUB MUSEUM HARAJUKU.

Yesterday I tunneled deep through the Shibuya-side backstreets of Catstreet…way back there…and once again found myself at Sub (“zeuss”) Museum. This is a curiosity shop for those who might find a general recourse in “interesting” to be usual hat. Sub is not usual hat. I was there to meet up with Tomihiro Kono and Sayaka Maruyama, a hair and head-prop artist, and his partner Sayaka who is a filmographer and photographer who together make the duo “Neon o Clock Works” based in London. They are showing clips by projector of some of their amazing work here until Dec. 25th (The short film “Deja Vu”, You. Must. See. It.).

It was not my first time here; I did a photoshoot using Tomi’s creations earlier this year and it turned out amazing. Please see it here.

But this time I want to focus on the shop…

キャットストリートの裏道を入ったところにある、人気のない通り。そこにあるのがこの、Sub Museum。このショップは、知る人ぞ知る隠れ家のショップ。
今回私は、ロンドンをベースに”Neon o Clock Works” としてデュオで活動する、ヘアアーティスト／ヘッドピースアーティストのKono Tomihiroさんと、そのパートナーで、映像作家／フォトグラファーのMaruyama Sayakaさんが今までに撮った作品を上映しているということで、拝見しがてらお邪魔しに行ったのだ。

実はこのショップ、以前に書いたことがあるように、始めての訪問では無いのです。(その時の模様はこちら。)

この時はTomihiroさんの作品について書かせて頂いたけど、今回はショップの方にフォーカスをあてたいと思います。

It is on the first floor of owner and curator Mariko Tsukamoto’s dwelling,repurposed into a space where she sells antique clothing and vintage curiosities that she collects. There is an abundance of victorian lace and silk robes and other pieces that have probably seen some amazing things in their past lives. Dolls and trinkets are also scattered about, some of them made by Mariko herself. I won’t forget the mermaid and the doll made as a hermaphrodite from our photoshoot.

このショップは、オーナー／キュレーターのツカモトマリコさんが住んでいた住居の一階が使われていて、そこではアンティークの服をメインに、マリコさんが趣味で集めたヴィンテージのものが置かれている。その中には、ヴィクトリアン時代のものと思われるレースとシルクのドレスなどもあり、その背景に存在する歴史に思いを馳せることができる。
人形や小さなアクセサリーなど、中にはマリコさん自身が作ったものも置かれていた。以前撮影の時に、両性具有のマーメイドの人形もあったりして…

I would like to talk to Mariko more in depth about some of her collectibles, but for now, consider this a preview. During the visit I dug out the tidbit that her daughter Rin is an upcoming model, who is in the lookbooks for Ohta (and everyone kind of fell in love with her from this!).

ちらっと聞いた話によると、マリコさんの娘さんのリンちゃんがモデルとしてデビュ―したとのこと。Ohtaのルックブックに出てたモデルはリンちゃんだったのね！
ちなみにTomihiroさんとSayakaさんの作品は、今月２５日まで上映しているので、気になった人は是非是非足を運んでみてください！２５日にはプチ集まりするらしい〜
